Re: Whats the best S10 to swap the sy/ty guts into?
For cost savings use an (89-2002) S10/Sonoma 4X4 (If you want to keep your AWD) It does not matter if it is extended cab or not. Fleet side and flare side make no difference either, but an extended cab will not fit on a regular cab frame (and vice versa)
Some like the extended and some do not. Not sure what the weight savings of going with a regular cab. Also, some extended cabs use a two piece drive shaft, (two drive shafts) but at one point there was a single piece available.
Other things to note is the prop shaft flanges are different from 4X4 to AWD. The front axles splines may be as well (Did not personally get there yet) You should also look for a truck already with the 3:42 ratio, so you do not have to change your axles to match the AWD transfer case. Also seek a posi rear and if you are lucky you can find one with factory rear disc brakes. The build codes can be located in the glove box.
Everything should bolt up -or in without major modifications. You're biggest hurdle will be the electrical connections as the SY/TY is too specialized for even Painless Wiring to make an adaptor kit (last I looked). There are specialty FI type tuners that will custom make you a adaptor harness, but it is expensive. (bring vaseline and assume the position)
Xtreme's and Sonoma SS's are rear wheel drive. AWD will not apply here unless you change to an 4X4 frame and transfer the cab and bed to that frame. The good thing is the S10/sonoma's are abundant and cheap.
