what would you buy?

I'd go with either a 240sx or an RX-7, but I'd swap an LS1 into them. You can put up the LS1's for cheap now and throw in a cam and you're at 400rwhp with bolt-on's. All in a car that weighs less than 3k lbs.

Unless you have deep pockets for the impending transmission failure from excessive AWD clutch dumps, I would stay away from a TT Stealth. God know what else is super pricey to fix on those.

My money, for a high schooler who wants something cheap, fun and fairly reliable, grab a late ?80s-early ?90s turbo Dodge/Plymouth. Any T2 engine (turbo engines with a factory intercooler) has a stout bottom end (steel crank/rods, forged pistons) and a relatively cheap to maintain SOHC head. Exhaust flange is a standard T3 so turbo swaps are a piece of cake. They're cheaper/more reliable than a DSM, not that that says much.

As mentioned above, a 91-92 Spirit R/T rocks in the bang for the buck category. They can be had for a couple thousand bucks, have the same T2 bottom end (will hold 400+whp reliably in stock form), a Getrag 5-speed transmission (stock will hold 500+whp reliably) and a Lotus 16-valve aluminum head (TIII turbo engine). In proper tune, Spirit R/T?s run mid-14?s in the mid 90 mph range right out of the box.

I picked up a high mileage one for $1300 and had an absolute blast with it. A T3/T4 turbo pushed trap speeds to 110mph on a tired 180,000 mile motor. The biggest shortcoming of the TIII is its tendency to shred timing belts if not properly tensioned. Luckily, it?s a noninterference motor so no valve job is necessary.

DSM can be very reliable if they are mantained like everything alse out there you just can't drive the ever living shit of them all the time and expect them to run forever.

I have a 91 Eagle talon TSI (fwd) for my DD. The car has 158k on it and it runs great. I have modded it too lol. It has a B16g turbo a cheap used spearco FMIC , walbro 255 fuel pump and a megasquirt EFI computer on it. The stock exhaust has been cut-off to dump under the pass rear wheel area. @ 16 psi of boost it made 270HP with 276 FT of torque. The motor is all stock. Car still runs strong i drive it pretty hard but i mantain it also thats the key.

I'd look at the turbo DSMs or turbo dodges. A turbo 2.2/2.5 swap into a rampage would make a quick and cheap beater, lol. My turbo minivan is a lot of fun too.

Edit - check out this turbo rampage: http://www.maximumpsi.com/rampage.html :D

yeah where ya gonna find a rampage @ they mad those from 82-84. they were all carbed 2.2 engines.
