Mtn Z is right. These trucks take a lot of work - but they're worth it. :)

What is it about these trucks that makes them so costly to keep up? Is it the owners, manufacturing, or just that they are studs and people want to show it?

Like I said in my first post, there are 1,001 things that go wrong. It's essentially a manufacturer problem...Typhoons are Jimmys at heart, an unbelievably unrefined truck. GM cut every corner possible on the Tys (just read the thread in Newbie section called "What am I doing here?") and it resulted in an amazing engine that's a bitch to work on, a crappy transmission and a AWD system that can't handle the power, a front end that lasts all of 40k miles (if you're lucky), and many more. Add in all the base Jimmy crap (fit and finish, rattles, etc.) and you've got a truck that hauls a$$ but only when it's running.

Do NOT take a prospective truck to your "run of the mill" mechanic. People on this board who work on these trucks have a history with them and know them. General mechanics, heck, even GMC mechanics, will not.

I agree with the others...don't be deterred, but be prepared. A few blasts down the street make you forget about all the problems.

I still can't thank you all enough, but thank you. I will continue to read up on these sweet trucks. I orgianlly planed on buying before winter, but I think that has changed. I will have more money and knowledge in the spring. So please anything that you all can help me with would be GREATLY appreciated! I will be posting more and more here, because everyone here has the same mind set as me, TY's and SY's ARE AMAZING! I can't wait to show the imports what AMERICA has to offer!

Re: What to buy a Ty?

hey,

if you really dont know that much about these rare and unique vehicles. its either a hit or miss. i am not one to tell you what to do with your money. but these vehicles are so rare gmc doesn't even wanna work on them anymore. you can't get parts. everything is scarce. good luck in your adventures (which is exactly what your going to have with a typhoon). i wouldn't say its the owners. i bought a truck that was running flawlessly and on my way home.. the shit hit the ceiling. truck started smoking. oil lines were leaking. then the ic pump went out. alot of little things.

good luck

So you would not buy another? Do you not like your choice? Forgive me if I am wrong, but there has to be parts. Maybe not original, but certainly there are aftermarket. With that in mind, the aftermarket could even be better than the original.

Did you fix your truck yourself? Did you have anyone help you with your purchase? Did you know what you where doing? Not poking at you, just looking for info.

There are plenty of parts and people around to do work and help.

you just have to make the effort to care enough to ask and then get it done. There are quite a few people on here who werent mechanically inclined when they first got their truck. Over time, they read the info, asked questions and slowly learned how to diagnose and take care of the common probs.

Ive owned my Sy for 10 years, owned 2 Typhoons. Each one of them as given its fair share of problems and each of them has been fun as hell to drive.
