what roller rockers to use

ok right now i have a full stock motor except trubo etc but am interested in putting some rpm valve covers on what roller rockers should i use with this stock combo? But something that will work when i do a motor build will still work with my l35s cam etc?what are the roller rockers worth for hp?also any feed back on the rpm valve covers

comp magnum are pretty good are far as price and durability go. thats what I use on 85% of my builds.

i am running the comp magnums too. seem like a good rocker, i have had no problems with them(only have 500 miles on them :D ) and am running them with l35's and 412 cam

no, they are steel.

i use the cheapo proform rockers on my stock setup. i bought a set of blazers (really cheap) for my small block 3/4 ton about 7 years ago and they have performed flawlessly so i figured what the hell. the proform kit was a v8 kit so i dissected one and it is exactly like the harland sharp rocker... minus about $100.

Ive heard stories from my machine shop about aluminum ones breaking s low as 40,000 miles. Anyone else ever heard that? Thats why I havent put them on my truck yet. Thought about getting the stamped steel roller rockers.

i guess it also depends what rocker studs you are using. The full bodied roller rockers will need the longer 7/16" screw in studs. Also remember if you dont have guide plates you will want the self aligning kind.

Yeah the machine shop installed the shorter arp studs on mine and i broke 2 in less than 200 miles.

ok heres is what im not sure about .right now i am using stock heads im gonna put the rpm covers on so i figure do rockers so being my motor is stock i want to go with 1.6s right?ok now the stock lb4 heads have pressed in studs right? will full bodied work on them or do i need to change the studs and if so can it be done with them on the truck?>Also self aliging is that a must or what ?

i would go 1.5 but that's just me. you will have to go with self aligning unless you want to drill @ tap your heads for screw in studs that will allow you to use guide plates (you need one or the other).

here's a suggestion... since you are only partially through with your build why don't you just put the stamped rockers back on and buy/build some vortecs with guide plates, hard prods and the most expensive rocker arms you can find and put all that shit on when you finish your build?

well i havent even took em off yet but like i said my motor is fully stock heads intake etc and it runs perfect 11.8 so far and i just bought a mccoy front mount and hopefully rpm covers so i figured i would just throw a set of rollers on since im there already

if you are running 11.8 then i would just leave everything as-is. roller rockers and valve covers won't make you any faster. i know this because i regularly dyno my truck between mods. put that hot money in a "bottom end rebuild savings account" before it burns a hole in your pocket!

I thought i remember telling you the studs they told you to use were the wrong ones. Could they have been too short? Usually they need to be longer. The metric screw in studs are too short for anything but the cup style comp self aligning rockers.

i installed 3/8" arp rocker studs on my new vortecs....part number arp-134-7201...are these the shorter studs you are referring to? 7/16" seemed like overkill.... fyi, i used the crane blue racer 1.5 rockers... :-?

i believe the vortecs are 10mm, so the 134-7201 would not fit. The screw in studs for the vortecs are 1.595" from the head surface to the top of the 3/8" thread so they are relatively short.

For example ARP PN 134-7104 is a 7/16-14 screw in stud for 3/8" roller rockers, but has a 1.895" length so it will fit the full bodied rockers..

made a mistake on the pn....its a 100-7201....ordered them based off of the info from one of renz's old posts...

yeh thats the right part number. They are a tad short for the full bodied rockers.. only 1.595" from head surface with .580" of 3/8-24 threads. We use the Comp Magnum 1417-12 rockers with these.
