I've noticed that the porn and spam posters have user names with one post. So these programs find the vulnerable forums, register, and post their shit.

We've all seen the " copy the letters below into the box" on other sites when we've registered as a user. This is obviously an attempt to foil these 'spam' programs.

Why hasn't this been incorporated on this site? Cost? Somebody's time to do it? (I can't do it, I don't have the knowledge / skills, or I'd volunteer).

The problem is that there are 'captcha farms' in the third world where people sit in front of computers all day and crank out solutions for spammers for ten cents an hour.

I'm an admin for the boards at NMRADigital.com, and found that the only way to get rid of 100% of the spam registrations was to put a person in the loop and require moderation for every new user.

How about change "Racing your Brick" and "Members Projects", (which seem to be our forums with the majority of this activity) to fully-moderated?

They'll just move to another forum.

We really need to do something about this, I like to go on syty.net when im at work and now they are responding to threads that look normal, and you have no idea what you are opening.

Keith is working on getting the forum updated to V 3.7, with that there will be some more features that should help cut the spam posts.

For right now, doing our best to delete em when we see them pop up. Thanks to those who leave me the messages to get em.

I spend a couple hours a day just deleting and banning spammers so for now it is a completely manual task,
and it sucks let me tell you.

I do browse the forum at work so when I hit a pron ad I pray that it doesn't send up a flag to anyone else that might have admin privileges on our firewall here at work.
I have told the other network admin that I am browsing porn ads placed by users and deleting them.
Problem is the ones with pics I have to view to be able to delete them.

Once we get up to the current version of VBull there are many more options and hacks we can install to control this stuff.
Morgan was staying on top of these kinds of options but he has moved on to his BMW project and isn't spending much time here anymore.
As soon as Keith steps in and upgrades we will notice an improvement.

I'm in the same boat. I try to get all I can from work, since I'm on .net pretty much all day... sadly, as much as I hate my job, I would like to keep it, so I can only delete the text based spam from work. Otherwise, when home, I try and stay on top of it when I'm at my computer.

It is nice to know everyone is helping us keep an eye out for spam by reporting posts and such. And thanks to everyone for not responding to the spammer posts :tup:

I had it set up that admins had to approve new users but people complained and it got changed back. I really want to update the forum software but finding the time to do so is hard. It will also entail shutting the site down for a few hours so we don't loose posts either. I was hoping to do it this week but now we have a hurricane bearing down on us.

im actually at my grandma's house on my laptop and this came up :rotf: :rotf:
i closed the browser REAL QUICK when that popped up, my grandfather is a preacher and the look on his face when he cought a glimpse was priceless :lol:

I leave my computer running all day long, pretty much 7 days a week. Im always logged in and im always on IM. If you ask me, I will add you to my buddylist (I have it set to private, so you cant IM me unless your on my list, sorry) so people can leave me messages. I work from home, so I continually walk by and check every hour or 2. Few of you guys are awesome at it. I even get phone calls for those who have my number. Thats great, I dont mind it at all, just dont call me beyond midnight my time (Central FL) as a courtesy please.

There is usually an admin/mod logged in at all times. Most of the stuff is caught really quick, so you guys never see it.

Until we get the upgrade, we just gotta keep doing it manually for now. Trust me, it sucks.

I agree! Im on here all the time at work and Im work for a health care organization. I really hate running into crap like that with the work computer.
I think its not real bad for the most part and most times you can tell that its a bogus post anyways.

Hmmm. I started this thread as a suggestion for the 'spam problem'. I had no idea there was this much interest in this subject. Didn't expect this kind of response, especially from Keith, who we rarely hear from.
