Me and another member on here are looking for a good 220v Mig welder. I really want something that can weld up to 3/8 i dont need more than that. if it is mig/tig combo, thats fine too. I am only doing a few cages with it, however i am not looking for a piece of crap, my Miller is that now. It has been to 3 major repair places with no luck. anyways, let me know what you got, and remember, i am in Az but travel a lot.

Re: Welder

I doubt a 110 is giving you full penetration, sticking toghether sure.

Whats model/year of your miller? I have always had great luck with miller.

mig/tig combo really doesn't exist. It kindof does if you buy what they call a powersupply then add a wire feed unit onto it. But even in our shop where we have some rather large welders we don't have/run mig/tig off the same machines.

its a 172 challenge, about 7 years old now. i run mig mix. changed the liner a few times( every other spool) and had air gas look at it, Phoenix welding supply and some other place, said they didn't see anything wrong with it. It acts like its not getting gas, or the material is dirty, very porous welds SOMETIMES. i have welded perfect clean material, inside my garage, door down, no wind or anything and every once in a while it will just weld like shit. not really like there is no gas, but similar, closer to really dirty.

Hey Ken, that sounds like a bitchen welder, but i only have single phase 220, i dont think i can use something that big, nice price though. i appreciate it

Re: Welder

Have you tried a diff. spool of wire and gas? I have heard of both causing issues before.

Yep, brands and locations of gas/ wire. this has been a problem for 3 years now.been through 6 spools, and 10 bottles. i have had a friends welder to do important stuff, but he needs it back now.

Re: Welder

i have a Lincon 110v welder for gates and small stuff and it works great, but i know it won't properly weld 1/4 and probably not 3/116. i only have flux-core in it but i know it is only good for thin stuff. i am building full cages and race bumpers for off road racing, my s-10 is back-halved and front halved, for welding .120 dom tube, 3/16 plate, some molly, i need to know i have perfect penetration. Nothing is really thick, but occasionally i do need serious welding, thats when i bust out the rosebud and heat up the material then lay some hot, slow welds.

Re: Welder

I use a 110v Lincoln 3200HD and i love it for what i do.

The next welder i purchase will be a Lincoln 180HD for sure.

We have Miller Triple Phases at work and they are always breaking down...

Re: Welder

I have an old antique Lincoln LincWeld ;)
As old as it is with a new ground, new hot lead, & electric taped wires it penetrates 3/8" plate like nothin' doin'. My dad bought it a while ago @ a storage bin sale for $25 'cause nobody was paying attention/was bs'ing, it sat for about 2 years before I ran 220 in the garage & set up a breaker then decided to learn how to weld. I've learned a shitty welder, even in the hands of experience .... still produces shitty welds!!!

Miller welders are shit IMHO & I've never liked using them nor have I ever heard good things about'em but to each their own.

Re: Welder

well, i have looked online a little while and don't mind buying new. the problem is there are so many sites that sell its hard to find who has the best price. I tried egay, not much there. I have tried several sites that have "sales" and they are not too bad, but i dont know all of these models. Guess ill have to go to a store and find a model i like and then search for it.

Open for any ideas guys, someone has to know a good place or a good welder f/s by somebody :D

TIA

Re: Welder

I've never had a problem with Millers, but each machine is slightly different. TIG welding is awesome, and a lot of fun, but it takes patience to learn how to do it right (and not shock the $hit out of yourself on accident  ). Best thing I've used for thick stuff is the tried and true arc welder. Nothing compares to the light-dimming metal-melting power they have, but for some stuff they just aren't practical. Go for more welder than you need and you'll be happy. I've also had good luck with Lincolns, they're solid. Never tried Hobarts though.

Re: Welder

Bringing up an old subject.
I am looking @ a Miller 180 mig welder.

My friends say Miller & Lincoln are same manufacture & Hobart IIRC?

Any guys here have the 180 Miller or Lincoln?

Thanks

Re: Welder

^ yes, miller=hobart, not lincon. I fixed my miller finally all i had to do was buy a new gun and hose. now it welds better than ever.

never had any of my lincons fail, and they welded great. if i were to buy another it would be lincon.

Re: Welder

I am looking for a 220 volt welder.

Most 110-115 volt welders seem to have a hard time welding anything thicker than, say .200"
