waste gate adjustment

Anybody know how to adjust the waste gate properly? i disconnected external boost controller and hooked back up to the factory boost control solenoid, tried to build boost...spitts and sputs and takes forever to build 5psi.... possible bad boost solenoid? Mis adjusted waste gate? Ecu retarding timing? I only see my waste gate rod move when i use the solenoid, when i run the boost controller...the rod dosent move...i already tested the diaphragm from leaks...seems to be working fine with the hand pump...holding pressure.. it launches like a bat outta hell with the boost controller set at 15psi but feels like it loses power after second gear....Anybody have any ideas???? FYI just bought it a month ago...still trying to figure it all out. thanks

Re: waste gate adjustment

You need to actually data log & see what is going on.
Could be knocking , ECU is retarding the timing which will cause your boost to drop down.

The wastegate is supposed to be approx 1/2 hole shorter, then pull on wastegate rod to attach to the wastegate arm.

Good deal, ill try it tomorrow morning and let you know. I plan on getting the scanmaster 3 soon, i know it will tell me a lot

Re: waste gate adjustment

What psi is that adjustment for? Half hole=adjustment for how much boost?

The stock memcal (chip) tries to control boost to about 14psi. The rod length adjustment technically doesn't adjust boost if the ECM is able control the boost. A longer rods usually means slower boost build up to 14 psi, shorter rod mean that it's more likely to spike and over boost before the ECM can adjust the boost to 14 psi.

Re: waste gate adjustment

When I had my Syclone mostly all stock, I can gain boost pressure by shorting the wastegate rod.

The ATR Pitbull chip was set to run 14 psi, but I adjusted the wastegate rod shorter to up the boost pressure, I had run 18-19 PSI ,all from adjusting the stock wastegate actuator.

The ECU was probably trying to be at 14 psi, but with way the wastegate was adjusted, it had no say really.

That is the way it worked for me & ran 12.29 @ 108 stock turbo, stock trans, converter, stock engine , no meth, pump gas 91 octane. Ca. crap.

The ATR chip changed the boost control from the stock closed loop (feedback) control to open loop boost control. Essentially with a open loop boost control the ECM sets the boost control solenoid to preset duty cycle doesn't adjust it.

Re: waste gate adjustment

all questions i wish i had the answers to, just bought it a month ago, it was a 10 sec. car the guy said... He just had Rpm motorsports build the engine and tune it about 20,000 miles ago...he has limited information. it has a chip dunno what kind of tune, i plan on buying a scanmaster 3 soon, im sure that will tell me more about what my air fuel is doing and what my boost is set to...but for now.. im just trying to make sure i dont do any damage to the engine.....im a technician and im always thinking about possible damage...lol i believe it is the stock waste gate, it had a manual boost controller (cheapie under the hood twist top) and i just hooked up the factory boost control solenoid and just tried to adjust the waste gate (started adjusting and testing, ended up screwing the adjuster as far in as possible to get 15psi) i was getting on the freeway after work today and gased it pretty good and i saw my boost gauge read over 20psi and it felt like i started to lose torque/power... is this not a proper adjustment for my waste gate? should i go back to my manual boost controller? but even with that at times i see overboost....startin to drive me nuts...well i knew getting this Ty was gonna have a learning curve...im used to chevy small block No2 cars...lol someone PLEEEASE help educate me, I work at infiniti and had walked next door to GMC dealership to see if anyone there knew about these trucks and the response i got was "yeah, of corse...but they dont like people asking them questions...." my response was LMAO, if i ever said that to a customer.....FIRED!!!

Re: waste gate adjustment

it has pink injectors (dunno what lbs.) and a 3 prong chip burned by mike lae @ Rpm motorsports, mild cam, aftermarket turbine in turbo, original owner says the boost control solenoid never worked that well and he has been threw 2 manual boost controllers.. any recommendations on type of boost controller to go with? or is the boost control solenoid better/safer to use?

Re: waste gate adjustment

I worked for a gmc dealer for 8 years.... we had 1 syclone come in and i was the only one who knew what it was so they problably have no clue. Put the wastegate back to stock configuration and log it to see what its doing. Id also recomend a turbo tweak chip and if your cat is missing, it will overboost... a forge wastegate from sportmachines should fix that

Re: waste gate adjustment

it has a high flow cat in it, stock waste gate rod adjustment calls for 1/8" of rod from hole, what was factory boost pressure?

Re: waste gate adjustment

Once the engine is heavily modified, the factory adjustment of wastegate may no longer apply.

I would try to figure out exactly what your truck has for modifications.
