Want to make my ty handle...

Too many projects
Most everyone I know who has a Sy/Ty or thinks about them thinks straight line, but I've got straight line cars that are rather boring driving around everyday. I intend on driving mine daily, so I want something that feels better in turns, braking, etc....I'm not looking to build a purpose road course vehicle though lol.

Whats the best route to take if I want a Ty that feels more confident in the turns? Sway bars, shocks/struts, springs, any steering components?

thanks,

-Will

Re: Want to make my ty handle...

I would go with
Suspension
RPM or JS Coil over A arm kit with Qa1 12 way shocks.
Larger sway bar in front and add one to the rear.
New bilstein shocks in the rear.
All new polygraphite bushings and ball joints

Sterring
New Idel arm
Pitman arm
Tierod ends
Zq8 sterring box
Renz or Waller shaft

also brakes go with ls1 upgrade for the front and also the rear.

that sould make it handle very well

Depends on how much $$$$ you want to toss at it.

Start cheep and go up from there.

Replace the rubber in the stearing shaft where it connects to the stearing box shaft.
Replace your rubber bushings in your front suspension with polineoprime (sp) wuth griphite (sp again).

You can go struts or even tublar. But try the above first.

Hope this helps.

Re: Want to make my ty handle...

Sway bars from and rear with poly bushings, 17 or 18 inch wheels with good tires will help too.

One other thing most people over look when they do brakes are the brake lines. Sway over to stainless braided lines it make a whole lot better peddle feel.

Go to
www.raceprovenmotors.com
www.turbotime.us
and just look around you have alot of options that you can pick from.

Re: Want to make my ty handle...

My first recommendation to anyone wanting to make their SyTy Handle/Brake better is to rebuild the front suspension, add a rear sway bar and upgrade the front brakes to the LS1 12" fronts. From their you can add on steering shaft, Zq8 steering box, coilovers, maybe custonm rear suspesnion

Flyin Ryan

hated cuz he drives fords
Re: Want to make my ty handle...

also get some lowering leaf springs from belltech or some fiberglass ones to lower the rear some

Don W.

Stab it and steer it
Re: Want to make my ty handle...

As an aside I had my Sy's front end aligned today. All I can say is do that first using the modded settings. Made a quite noticeable difference in the way it handled.

Rebuild as in coil conv and bigger sway bar? What all do you consider when "rebuilding" it?

I was meaning rebuild the stock parts, but you can do aftermarket coilovers, I was just trying to keep the costs down.

A lot of trucks have bad balljoint, old shocks, & sloppy idler arms. New bushings, tie rods will also help tighten the front and help the truck handle better (the way it used). My suggestion to rebuild the front suspension is for cost reasons, I would think doing a coilover conversion with the stock A-arms, but that adds to the cost. The cost of doing the stock front rebuild with Moog part, plus a rear sway bar and LS1 brakes could easily run $1200 and that is doing it yourself.

are the 2 links posted here the only place to get aftermarket suspension parts on the web? are there a/m balljoints?

A lot of them aren't syty specific parts, but the 2 sites posted are vendors that are local to the community and are trusted.

I unlike the original poster, am trying to make a capable track-ready Ty. I want to autocross/ time attack it. I have the power and braking covered. I need to know who can make it handle like a Vette? I am willing to throw some cash at this project.

Honestly a SyTy will probably never handle as well as C4 or newer Corvette (or Evo/STi) without re engineering the suspension. Heavier weight, high center of gravity, flexible, frame, 4x4 suspension design
