DING DING DING!!!!!!! we have a winner. NOT A GASKET. seems like our head bolts were leaking coolant right on top of the head. Which head bolts go into the coolant passage?

Several of the head bolts go into the coolant passages. Probably every hole that is not "blind" will be wet. The book says coat all the threads with thread sealant. I used the white Permatex Hi-Temp thread sealant in a small tube from AutoZone and it worked fine. A quick Google search for "SBC head bolt sealant" reveals a lot of people like Loctite 518.

Seems like the builder did a poor job...so now its our job. Im just happy i know where the coolant was coming from...

I guess you'll scratch that builder off yur list eh??? Not to irritate anyone here but I have used red RTV with good results. Also ARP makes a sealant.

If you do one bolt at a time you can probably get away with not replacing the gasket but do you want to take that risk? On the other hand maybe a peak inside might be a good thing.
