I know another way...

just plug it into carfax and try each of the 11 characters till one works.

i used to have a program on my old computer that would do something similar, but the carfax method is just as easy.

I just received my newsletter from another car organization I am active in. There is an article on the VIN "check digit" This is the 'ninth' position in the VIN.

Observant people on here may have noticed my interest in "numbers" and "dates". I have known about this 'check digit', and that it is a mathmatic equation to compute it, based on the other 16 positions, but I never knew how it was done.

Until now.

Could 2 guys please post their VIN, but leave the NINTH digit out. Replace it with a: * I'll run it through my 'formula', and ask you to verify if I 'got it right'. Please double-check that you transcribed it correctly, before hitting "submit". ;)

It's an extra 'bonus', if your ninth is an 'X', or a 'zero'. And it doesn't have to be a SyTy VIN.

The check digit formula is on the internet. I made a cheat sheet for standard VIN Sy, Ty's (Most Sy are 1GDCT14ZM_880xxxx, Ty are 1GDCT18Z(n/p)_810xxxx

The known 91 Sy, 92 Ty, 93 Ty digits compute to 365, 324 and 342. You would just need to compute and add the last 4 digits. [math]You can factor out 11 out of those numbers since the multiple of 11 don't make a difference in the decimal portion[/math] to make its simpler for calculatations +2 for Sy, +5 92 Ty, and +1 93Ty, SoGt are +2 as well.

Why did I do it, some owners only give the last 4 digits of their truck when selling them. It makes it super easy for me to calculate vs doing the long hand version out everytime.

I also would guess its a prototype syclone. Most of the prototype's have the IGTCT prefix on them.

Re: VIN number "Check Digit"

Another interesting discovery - if you input a VIN on Google and replace the ninth digit with a 1, or a 2 or a 3 etc. you won't get the "Look Up Vehicle With VIN ________ Using CARFAX" link until you input the correct ninth digit.
I tried three VIN's off this thread and it worked each time.
