upgrade turbo

Re: upgrade turbo

I think a 12cm exhaust housing is plenty big for a stockish truck. Going external wastegate on the crossover tube will give you great boost contorl (if you can tollerate the noise). My goal is not going to be 10's. 12 flat or maybe really high 11's is my goal. Your talking to much money for me when you try and break into the 10s. 11s on the street is plenty fast. Pluss I dont want a caged up truck. A nasty street machine is all I want. Supras run the 25g or also known as the T67. They end up with plenty of top end as we all know.

If you have a 2800 stall converter a 14 cm is better, even for stockish trucks.( Better top end pull )

You do not need to have a loud external wastegate setup,,,,you can use a separate exhaust system w/a mini muffler,, or plumb the wastegate exhaust back into your exhaust system..

The really fast Supras run a much larger turbo than a 25G.

Getting a stock 17C or new 20g is fine from that place you are talking about. Wouldn't put any of their custom stuff on anything. Been there done that way too many times in the import world with their turbos. Not trying to tell anyone what to buy or where. Just might be a better decision to buy elsewhere and from a place that has real results, data and a good product.

The only sane choice, GT35RS w/TiAL v-band housing and A/C , yes thats a 4" inlet

Mitsubishi turbos are expensive, marginal gains for ~$1000 turbo

PTE turbo / downpipe kit for $1500 was about the best choice for a complete bolt on application, but you need the PTE syty housing which are on the endangered species list.

So it basically comes down to this, if your turbo needs rebuilding have it rebuilt, if you feel like throwing a few hundred at it so its not just a stock turbo, great but its not getting you much.

If you think there is some odd chance down the road that you might build the motor, but want to do the turbo first then consider the TiAL. The V-band doesn't restrict you to a specific housing, it fits with A/C, and if you want it bad enough you'll make it work, as another member on here did by making his own downpipe with about $150 in materials.

The welded adapter in the pics was a one-off but all the flanges to make one are readily available. If it didn't take a couple years to turn 10 adapters maybe they'd get cut out of billet but in reality its quicker to just have someone tig it up.

I can put all the pieces into a package for a good price, I'd like to see this setup get more adoption.

Re: upgrade turbo

They mainly deal in factory mitsubishi upgrades. I'm going to their shop next tuesday to see what they come up with. There's 12 Sy/Ty upgrades with 20g and 25g wheels ahead of me so I have plenty time to make a decision.

kwick6, I'll keep your kit in mind.............I like the Tial and tig isn't a problem since I have one and the down pipe isn't an issue either. I have access to a Wallace Coast tube bender and I'm in the process of making full length LS1Truck headers in 1 3/4" and 1 7/8" primary tubes with 3 1/2" collectors. I might try a full length downpipe without any welds out of stainless if I get the time. I'll let you know what I decide.

If fabrication isn't an issue then you would be much happier going this route.

how do you run an external wastegate on that turbo

You can mount one on the crossover, or there is potentially enough room to build an external wg flange into the T3 - Vband adapter but crossover is probably the easiest.
