so I think my transfer case is bad,so since i am making some good power should i put a ty case in it?was it a bolt in?or did i have to change the driveshaft?I can not remember.I know the splines were different.but wasnt that only on the output not the input?

The only diffrence in the sy t-case VS the ty t-case is the output shaft size. There is no benefit to swap over to a TY t-case IMO. The parts inside the case are the same except for the output shaft.

There have been alot of fast trucks (sy's) with out having any issues with the output shaft and or the drive shaft yoke.

I dunno the reason that gm made the ty cases diffrent than the sy cases. The only thing i can see is the output shaft bushing in the t-case extention housing may be more prone to gauling on the sy case vs the ty case.

Re: update my case?

I believe there is a difference in the planetary gears between the Sy and Ty case as well but i cant find any documentation on it.
I just recall that Ty being touted as the stronger of the two due to the larger output shaft and beefier planetaries.

The Sy case with 27 spline output is a BW 1372
The Ty case with 32 spline output is a BW 4472.

To swap them you just need to swap the front yoke on your driveshaft to match the output shaft of the T case.

I have been into the TY case and a SY case and the planetaries are the same from the looks of them. The pins are the same size etc. The best option if money is not tight is one of the billet 5 gear planet that i have seen on here.

I personally think GM made the ty case output shaft diffrent for the rear bushing wear since the ty case was found in the larger heavier trucks bravada, astro, typhoon,. I can't confirm this info i have searched it but came up with no info to prove it. so i am going on a warranty aspect of why it was made diffrent.

Re: update my case?

wow, lots of suspect info here.

Ty case had the 32 spline output, 1 more planetary gear and is slightly different length. (longer).

It will fit just fine, change the yoke on sy driveshaft but if you have a lowered truck best to shorten driveshaft also to prevent any binding.

Been there and done it on jeremy's syclone.

I can take pics of the differences in length, shafts, planetaries if needed.

whats the difference of a 4472 astro case with the 27 spline output?

jeff it apears to me that the ujoint on the ty is bigger than the sy?I am trying to fix a drivetrain noise in a stock ty I bought and want to try a sy case i have.
