Hi guys,
I'm in need of some technical help. My friend has a 93 Typhoon that has started running bad, it was only under hard acceleration, it splutters and will not accelerate, whilst sounding like the wastegate is fluttering open and closed. I have checked the fuel pressure with the FPR pipe disconnected and plugged and it sits at 43 PSI at idle. The plugs are very pale/white. Under normal driving/half throttle acceleration the truck runs fine. This has only come on recently.
The previous owner fitted a dump valve, uprated fuel pump, stainless exhaust from the turbo back and an external wastegate (no idea on make or model as cannot see any part number etc, but can post a picture of it). Since owning the truck my friend has fitted a MSD pro billet distributor after the original one died and a MSD 6 BTM and MSD coil. The previous owner gave a 10 in 1 chip and a 3 bar MAP sensor with the truck. I fitted these for my friend a few years ago, but the the truck would splutter real bad under hard acceleration, so that was removed and the truck ran fine, it went 12.8 in the quarter. But has not been able to repeat that in recent years.
Today whilst trying to get to the bottom of the problem I checked the fuel pressure again, still 43 PSI, but the truck smells to be running rich. I tried to check the timing but when i disconnected the tan wire under the heater core the truck would not run properly and had to hold the rpm up a bit, even then the timing was not stable at all. Switched off and reconnected the tan wire, but the truck still does not run right, cuts out when you put it into gear and the exhaust note sounds wrong. Whilst checking the truck I noticed a slight mist of exhaust fumes coming from the atmospheric dump on the waste, so i think the wastegate has a slight leak.
Would a leaking wategate cause the truck to run bad at idle now and under hard acceleration?
I've sprayed round all the vaccum hoses with carb cleaner to check for leaks and found none. I also bridged the pins on the diagnostic plug and came up with no codes.
Sorry for the long post, but I've tried to include as much info as possible.
Thanks for your patience reading this and any advice
