ugh, the worst thread topic

I'm actually considering selling my truck. Tonight I destroyed another Xfer case and the propshaft, maybe more. Lately when it goes into park it moves forward/back a LOT more than it usually does, like a good 1/4 foot. I've been trying to go easy on it, and havent been getting into the gas or launching very much at all the last month or so. The reason I say the last month or so is because I just replaced the Xfer case a month ago. I got on the gas from a stop (no boost launch, low RPM let off) close to a parking lot and CLUNK! with the sound of exploding gears. It has been rattling and clacking more than usual and I have been trying to figure out what was happening. I pull into the lot and inspect it. It doesnt go into park and stay there, will make a paddle like sound while moving and put into park. The shifter feels weird, I cant tell where neutral and reverse are, the stop points werent as prominent. The propshaft is laying on the crossmember not connected to the transfer case, couldnt see enough but it looks like the flange on the Xfer case just straight up broke. Its sitting in a parking lot without the chip or radio, luckily a mall parking lot with security (told them not to tow it). So im going there tomorrow morning with an impact to try to get the shaft off and see if it will drive. It does move, but the thing with park sucks ass, thats what happened with my last Xfer case explosion. So basically, I dont have the money (or the tools unfortunately) to keep on fixing the problems with it and need some type of alternative. I'd love to keep it in storage or something and just retire it for a while, but that wouldnt help my financial problem. If I end up selling or trading I will most definitely come back to this magical world of syty. I just need something more reliable. I always tell my friends this is the worst first car I couldve had for a daily driver, but it sure does kick ass when your not trying to get somewhere. I've always liked GNs, so mabe I'll check those out, although I'm sure they're probably just as bad as syty's  .

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

Sounds like you might have broken the propshaft.

It will many times take out the shift linkage on that side of the trans.

Get under it and see what it actually broken before you go assuming the worst. ;)

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

sounds like your propshaft let go and took out the range selector.. if so it's not as bad as you think but if that is the case i'd leave it in 2wd for a while.. baby the shit out of it while you save up for a gilbert propshaft before getting on it again because it sounds like you've been through this before and am fed up with it. I broke three propshafts.. first one was stock, second was stock cut up and reinforced, third one was a custom made one that was suppose to never break  anyways I saved up the beans and put in a gilbert. It's pricy but you won't have to worry about it again.

Good luck and hope you don't have to sell.. but if you do GN's aren't as bad as sytys but you'll pay some coin for a nice one that hasn't been beaten to death.

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

Hey man, I know exactly how it feels. The first of driving my Sy, the tranny went out. My truck is my every day driver, at least my once a week driver  I have wanted to give up and get something else several times, until I find myself out side under the hood fixing what ever is wrong. It would be worth it to get a gilbert propshaft from what I have heard. That is mod I looking forward to doing, it sounds like it worth the money.

Yes I think I will, its got ATRs shaft in there now and its taken some good launches, but I would like to keep it more than Id like to let it go and just buy a pos daily for a while.

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

I have a theory.

How much boost are you guys launching with? I use an average of 4-6 PSI and have never launched with more than 7-8 PSI and I have honest to goodness, probably over 3000 launches on my truck in the past 6 years and it's got the original propshaft with 78,000 miles on it. Any time I tried launching harder, the tires spun and it felt too violent like it was really harsh on the drivetrain (not to mention, only produced worse 60' times!) I also never do a "dry hop" at the track, for the same reasons.

Most of my 60's were 1.7's and low 1.8s, but I have cut a best of 1.63 on a high 11 second run.

My theory is that the parts break when you spin the tires and they suddenly "catch up" and it suddenly jerks the whole drivetrain. I've met a handful of guys who do the "dry hops" to clean their tires at the track, and I think every one of them has had a handful of drivetrain failures...[/two cents]

I see what your saying but I know with my truck i've never launched harder then 7 psi and like I said above I killed three shafts without a hiccup unfortunately.. At first I figured it was something with the trans mount but since the gilbert's been in I haven't had a problem :crosses fingers::

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

Do any of your tucks jungle by any chance, like do you ever hear a jingley sound from vibration or speed while running or driving? Oh and it looks like I snapped the ujoint, and while trying to remove it (wit torx) i stripped one and now im real pissed that i was 1 away from possibly having it home. Im ready to get a grinder and cut the bastard by the rubber joint to get it outta there. But the trans and/or transfer case is still weird, I didnt see any marks or anything from where the shaft hit anything, i need to play with the linkage and see if its loose or something. It seems like it wont shift out of park, and park really is like neutral with a paddle like noise whne moving.

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

if it rolls in park and you hear a slapping noise it could be the parking planatary gear.(parking pall) but the edges get worn off from not using the parking brake before putting it into park. This being rounded of does not allow the swing arm to catch and lock the trans into park. Just a thought

Re: ugh, the worst thread topic

ok so I granny drove it home and ran fine, shifted fine and everything. Onlu problems now is the no park issue, and the shifter stop points are weird. it feels loose or tangled or something when you go through the gears on the shifter and I cant tell where the gears are over OD and under park. The linkage looked liked it had been chewed on by the Ujoint where it broke, I just cant tell what all it did. Its not tangled or anything, and it's pretty tight. Anyone know whats up with it.
