Typhoon towing dilema...

I know towing isn't the best idea for a Typhoon, but I'm faced with an upcoming decision that I just can't figure out a solution for...

My wife and I currently have an '03 V8 4runner and the Typhoon. We'd like to get either a C5 Vette or a MKIV Supra in the future but to do so, the wife says one of the cars we have now has to go. We ride motocross and have a small utility trailer for hauling the bikes to the track, using the 4Runner to tow...

I'm faced with parting with the Typhoon or getting it set up to tow and swapping the 4runner for the 'new' car. You can guess what I'd rather do. Is there anybody out there that knows of a good reciever hitch that fits the Ty without having to cut up the rear roll pan? I suppose if it needs some trimming that might have to do.

As for the towing issue, I live about 5 miles from the freeway and there are only 4 stoplights between the freeway and my house, the track is just off the freeway down a dirt road. So basically, at most the tranny only needs to shift a few times and I will NOT be in boost while towing. Heck, she even said if it needs a 4L80E for towing we could do that. I just really need to find a good reciever hitch to sell her on towing with the Ty so I can keep it.

PS I know this has been covered before as to whether I should or shouldn't tow, but nobody (at least that I could find) has ever posted info about a reciever that might actually fit.

For the $5k you'd spend on a 4l80e, just buy a cheap tow vehicle. Otherwise, how much would a trailer and bike(s) weigh? like 2500lbs at most? My typhoon has been towed by another typhoon with no problems. I've seen typhoons tow a jetski with no issues also. Go for it if you want to.

I don't know which hitch, sorry.

There's a member here named "Towing Typhoon" and he's in AZ too.

He tows with his Typhoon and runs 11's if I remember correctly.

So it's possible......may want to shoot him a PM.

You won't find a nice looking bolt on hitch.

You will need to have someone build one.

As for towing bikes you mentioned, I would add big tranny cooler, stay out of boost as much as possible and not worry about it.

How many cars do you have?

I'd buy a beater and tow them with that.

She doesn't want to have another car in the driveway is the problem. Plus, I can't bring myself to drive something I don't like, even if it is just to the track and back.

Re: Typhoon towing dilema...

you can have a custom hide a hitch build. you will need to cut a hole behind the plate. and also set the plate up so it flips up and out of the way. i say you should be good towng with the ty. not like your pulling a house

I have a receiver ill sell u. It came off my sy, I took it off to save some weight. IIts a "hide a hitch". U have to make a square notch in the middle of the roll pan. I think I have a flip up licience plate holder Ill give you too.

If the Sy and Ty mounts are different or he doesn't want it I'll take it.

OT, but Billy I think I saw your truck on Valencia just West of Kolb a few weeks back. Wht/Wht 3 gauge pod. Me and my roommates are moving out to Rita Ranch so we'll probably see eachother on the road at some point.

Re: Typhoon towing dilema...

The best hitch I have seen for a ty, actually had the reciever mounted vertical.

Requires a custom ball/hitch to go with it, but avoided cutting rear cover at all, and the issue with gas tank being right in the way.

Obviously being vertical is not made for a BIG trailer, but we are talking small here anyways.

In fact the owner and myself worked on that truck on a lift several times before we even noticed it was there.. Very stealth.

Actually, that wasn't mine. A buddy called me up to make sure it wasn't because he saw it on the side of the road, looked like it was having problems, he also noticed the 3 gauge pod. Mine looks 100% stock minus the ZR1 wheels/2" lowering-leveling. No gauges in mine.

Tow it with the C5. I have seen a picture of a C5 towing a small trailer with supplies to autocross events.

tow that shit...do some nice 4wd burnouts at the spot...hook the stuff back to the truck...and drive home!

Yes I drive a Typhoon.
Re: Typhoon towing dilema...

My boss tows his jet ski with his C5 all the time.

I agree, tow with it. I believe Spooldup was selling a hitch made for a TY at one time.
Ask him for pics, I know he had some at one time.
