I'M TORN AND NEED ADVICE!!!!
My GTO lease will be over mileage soon and I need a new ride. I have two options right now:
take advantage of the lease pull ahead and get into a new Saturn ION Redline OR
buy the Ty I've wanted since high school.
Before you offer advice know that I'll be driving 40-50 miles per day between work, daycare, gym, and home.

Redline: warranty, decent mileage, sweet little powertrain, suicide doors, app. $19000
Typhoon: everyone knows the pros and cons, $14,000 to $16,000

Please guys help a brother out. What would you do?????

Re: Typhoon or Redline???? Advice, please.

in hindsight, i wish i would have bought another daily before i bought the typhoon

which is what i say you should do, 250 miles a week adds up FAST on a collector vechile
not to mention these things get horrible gas miledge unless you drive it like an old lady (why buy iy then?)

You'll get a better interest rate on the new car (provided you'll be financing).

Saturn will run for 100K+ miles.

Ty will run for 1K before you need to change plugs :)

Personally...I'd go for a newer car for a daily. For a fun car - hell ya - Tys rock.

Ultimately - it is your choice.

I have to agree with the others, a Ty is a great "fun type" vehicle but not very practical in your case. An ION Redline will get you your mileage and reliablilty(sp?).

I agree with the last posts. The saturn is a cool fast car for daily driving. I almost bought one before my GTP. Sy/ty's are fun cars but not to reliable as DD. Some people do use them as daily drivers. I use mine to pick up my son from school every day. only 2 miles round trip. I bought mine to drive and not to collect. I too wanted one right after HS. I test drove one new off the showroom. Sticker was 26k and they were going to let me have it for 17k. This was feb 92' and the guy had it on his lot too long. The ty should be your 2nd car to drive on weekends and sometimes to work on a nice cool sunny day.

That is exactly what the rational side of me says. BUT, the emotional side says get the Ty.

I think the overall cost of ownership will be significantly lower with the Saturn, but the original transaction price will be lower with the Ty.

Not to rain on your parade, but my buddy had a redline and drove fairly conservatively. His clutch went out at 8,xxx miles because they use the regular ole one from the original ion. Just something to keep in mind in you don't want to spend $. They would not replace it under warranty, saying it was his "aggresive" driving that made it go out, coupled with the fact that it was a higher-performance car.

I use mine as a DD but if I could afford it, I would have a new car/truck as a DD. But,,,since I'm in college I can't afford it. I drive my TY pretty much everyday and have never had any problems, but I don't drive as much as you're going to be either. Soon as I get out of college I'll have a new vehicle as a DD, so my advice is....get the saturn then the TY.

Get the Redline. As far as cost of ownership, the Ty will actually be higher. When $h!t goes on these trucks, its expensive. :(

For a Ty alternative, I would look into the Saturn Vue Redline SUV. 250hp AWD, 17inch wheels ground effects....

Get the Ion Redline. SyTy's are not reliable enough for a DD. You can always buy a Ty later once you've got yourself a decent DD... OR get a beater DD and buy a Ty. :D

If you want a good sporty DD then get a 4th gen camaro ss or z28,their a great DD! My dad drove me and my sis from NY-VA every month while still using it as a DD every day. They also do well on gas milage. Thats just my suggestion. but thats what I would buy

Yeah, they look great. But a little out of my league on price right now. I'm trying to stay under $20,000.

Sounds like the consensus is.........ION Redline.

I drive 40 miles 1 way to work and had to get rid of my Sy till I can have it as a 2nd car (hopefully in about 2-3 years). Get the Saturn and get it paid off, then pick up a Ty.

Buy a Ty and a $1000 15 year old Japanese car for a backup.

Sounds like you're comparing apples and oranges - totally different vehicles. On the upside, I drive my Syclone to and from work every day and enjoy every mile of it  It "can" be done, but make sure you have a backup vehicle, just in case! And if you're looking for good fuel mileage, skip the Sy/Ty.

:werd: I love my Ty, but I'd like to have the money (and space) for a different vehicle for a DD. I kinda like the new Colorado Xtreme. I'd like a 4 door. Kinda weird being a 5-cyl, but pretty good mileage, practical, and new. But with the Ty and Camaro already, I don't have the room for another car currently.

If it comes down to the redline.....take a decent look at the Cobalt SS.....Same chassis, but a far superior style/feel IMO......Just a thought.
