Re: Ty starter replacement

I was just under there for a while messing with mine, Did not removed any of that. There is actually what looks like a cut out for the starter to pass through. Hope that helps

Re: Ty starter replacement

a manual trans has a bell housing , prop shaft is on the other side of the truck , two bolts and alot of mo***r f***ing and its outs.... not hard at all , worst part is the wires are so short and the bolts for the positive cable and the dreaded purple wire dont give you alot or working room.

i wonder if your refering to the inspection/torque converter cover as a bel housing. i find removing the inspection cover makes it easier...

Wrangling the old one out while trying not to drop it on your face is the hardest part. Replace it with the 454 mini starter and it will be much easier going back in. Propshaft is on the opposite side of the engine from the starter, and sometimes removing the inspection cover helps.

On ramps. I removed the Ground strap and the two bolts. Then I was able to slide it about an inch in a half to the front of the truck. This is where the MF's come in, and with a Wiggle Wiggle... It will slide right out. Then remove the purple wire. Don't forget to do the "PURPLE WIRE FIX" While you have the starter out. I replaced my old (black) with this mini (red) one.

Re: Ty starter replacement

Itried two different mini staters this weekend with no luck it wont slide in all the way. It bottoms out on the solenoid the mini replacement for the astro vans also wont slide all the way in. This red one above looks like it will fit though.

Re: Ty starter replacement

bump

is it red one a 98 3500 454 starter ?

I'd like to know as well.

My starter started making that grinding noise...also had that heat issue, purple wire mod was done to truck and still causing issues so I think it's probably time to replace starter/solenoid.

Also, need to remove flexplate cover to check gear teeth clearance per research...looking at the bolt locations, the one by the propshaft looks difficult...does propshaft have to be removed to get that one bolt or were you guys able to remove that with just a socket?

It was kind of like trying to figure out the Horseshoe ring trick. It will only slide in or out one way. It is a tight fit. When I did mine, There was only about a 1/16 of clearance to get the starter out. You will have to play with it to figure it out.

Tell them you need a starter for a 1996 3/4 ton with a 454 part # P6449S

Hey Jay, I was referring to the flexplate cover bolts, not the starter...

They are the torx style bolts, and I was looking at the bolt towards the prop shaft, looks super hard to get at it. I had some torx style allen wrenches but could not get it on the bolt, not sure if torx socket will work either...

These damn trucks and their impossible to get to bolts!

I just took my starter to the shop to get it rebuilt...it was cheaper than buying one and I kinda liked the fact that it had a nice bowtie on the starter!!
