Not sure how much you want to spend, but if you are rebuilding the motor have you thought about keeping it stock or going race/street rebuild. What kind of money to you want to spend on a rebuild?

Re: TY Rebuild

I dont really have the money to do a transplant i think i just want to do a rebuild, and a turbo job but i was hoping for a good price, definetley nothing over 4 grand but i only bought the truck for three so i figured 7 grand for a ty aint to bad, really though i just wanna drive it again, i think about the truck so much i feel like its my wife and just want to get it running right again, the oil smells like gas i got blue smoke on accel i had the head gaskets and valve cover gaskets replaced, but i drove it for an hour on the freeway and when i got home realized that they forgot to replace one of the vaccum seals(shotty work) so i replaced that and havent driven it since, so iam thinking that i may just have a real bad compression problem but the turbo barely spools also, so this weekend iam giving her an oil change and going to attempt the trip of driving it back home wich is an hour and a half and then i want to find a reputable mechanic in the area and try some diagnostics

Re: TY Rebuild

Look at the vender section. They know their stuff and have great products.

:stupid: You can get a shortblock with good internals for around 4-5K, which usually includes the required block work, balancing and assembly.

I think we may be going off a little lack of info. Let me see if I can help 92nymphoon out here...

whats up I just Bought a new Ty #1118 and need to do smoe work to the engine and turbo, i live in WA and want someone whos knowlegeable in working with them, i need to rebuild the engine or atleast i think i do, my dip stick and oil smell like straight gas and i have blue smoke upon accel, the turbo barely spools wich iam pretty sure means the bearings are seized, and it is so sluggish that it feels like theres no compression at all, i just had the head gaskets and valve cover gaskets replaced, and i also had to plug a vaccum leak, ive been told that the truck could just have a shot turbo and bad compression wich could be causing all the problems but not really sure, if you can help please do thanks

I told him....

1). Go to www.syty.net and sign up. It will help you solve your problems more than this site will. Dont get me wrong, this is a great site but you are dealing with more than a normal S10.

2). Change the oil & filter NOW! Do it before driving one more mile! Gas in the oil will cause engine failure.

3). Replace all of the vacuum lines. This will make a world of differance in your truck! You have a major problem with it running rich. I bet this will fix it among other problems that you dont know you have yet. This may fix your turbo problem too. You can buy a kit for $65. email iturgeon@gmail.com . The kit is worth every penny and is easy to install.

4). Change the oil & filter again. You really dont want that gas in there.

5). Replace the plugs ( Delco CR42 or NGK UR6 plugs ), Wires ( Good ones...Taylor or ATR ), Cap and Rotor ( make sure they have brass terminals ) and the O2 sensor.

6). Change the oil & filter again.

Do these things and let me know what happens. :D

Anybody else got any more input or ideas for him. Maybe there somebody in his area that could help him out. :dunno:

Washington state, or Washington, DC?

Either way, find your locals... they can probably help you more than anyone regarding local mechanics.

I would recommend a compression check as job #1. You should see 110+ on each cyl, as a minimum. Below 100 = bad things.

You can probably get an engine done within your $4k budget, but be advised that there will likely be lots of issues beyond just getting the motor up to par. Not fixing all the other stuff will likely result in another dead motor.

It helps a lot to know what mods have been done to it so far - turbo, fuel system, chip, etc.

Re: TY Rebuild

as far as i can tell there have been no other mods, i know that the turbo has a big lack in spooling, i have blue smoke with the start and upon accel, and the oil smells like straight gas, iam going to go by what JK said and do a new vacuum seal kit and an oil change but on top of that iam going to do a engine warm up with some ats to see if i can maximize my piston seals just in case thats whats wrong, also during this iam going to do the compression check, then i will take it from there, hopefully it doesnt need a rebuild but if it does its getting done, plus i will be running throught the cooling systems and turbo components and all other parts with a fine tooth comb to prevent a rebuild from becoming a rebuild in a year like tubodig was saying, iam doing the initials on friday and will post my results so you guys can help from there, but until then if you think of anything let me know i appreciate all the help guys, and by the way WA state south sound/tacoma area

Re: TY Rebuild

Being FROM seattle, I would check things over like mentioned, then buy a engine from the canadians here on the board.

If you can't, don't want to do install we can find a reliable person in the area to do it for you.

Re: TY Rebuild

yeah iam not a mechanic as iam sure you can tell so putting an engine in/rebuilding one is not in me, but really i think the rebuild would fit my budget if it has to come to that, but i would love some info on some good mechanics in our area that knows the syty's

Re: TY Rebuild

I would get in touch with Scott at Detroit Turbo, he is up there and may be able to help you out. FWIW, you can rebuild your motor to stock specs with under 2k. I know I have done it more than once. I would definitely have it balanced, that is key. I skipped balancing last time and 40k later had my welded on pick up tube fall off. I am not 100% sure balance was the issue but what else could it have been you know? Give Scott a call and see if there is anything he can do for you. Like Dig said, get in touch with your locals, they may be priceless in help to you. 4K should easily build you a stock motor just so you know.

Re: TY Rebuild

well i got the truck home tonite i drove it for about 2 hours on the freeway, it drove good at 60 mph but at 70 it rattled like hell, i changed the oil, filter and the spark plugs before i left and keep in mind i havent driven this truck since may of 08, so i went over it real well before i left and realized it was only running on 5 cylinders cause one of the plug wires was just hanging there lol, pluged and started and obviously was a whole new beast started great and ran great besides tearing a hole in the o-zone, when i drained the oil it was a grey sludge with the consitency of something youd find when pumping your septic tank, it smoked real bad the whle way home but the engine wasn't getting hot nor was the radiator, since ive had it the brake light and anti lock lights have been on but when i yank on the emergency release the light still stays on, but the e brake doesnt seem like its on, i have no idea where the smoke is coming from it was night time the whole time i was driving it, but compared to what it was before is insane. iam going to bed and will see you guys tomorow morning,

Re: TY Rebuild

Sounds alot better. The vibration @ 70mph could be several things. My Ty does it too and I havent totally tracked it down yet. Unplug the ABS module and the ABS light will go off. The replacement unit is expensive, alot of guys take the ABS off. It takes about 50 lbs off. Did you do the compression test? Did you just change the plugs or did you do the wires, cap & rotor too? What plugs did you use? Did you change the O2? Are you still getting gas in the oil?

I would do a search ( click on "Search" at the to of the page ) to see if you can find anything out about the vibration issue.

Re: TY Rebuild

yeah i changed the plugs but not till after the drive and i used the ngk's you suggested, i didnt change the wires but i have some taylors iam going to use, i was going to use them for my xtreme but now that the ty is running iam going to use them on it, but its got MSD wires and ignition, i think the rotor is already upgraded, and i have a strong feeling that the truck was used for racing before i got it cause the engine is far from stock with a few things that piss me off like they tore the a/c tubing out it only has the compressor, and they modified the intake with a k&n FIPK and i dont know alot about turbos and this may be normal but someone poked a hole behind the filter and ran an oil line to it, and now there is a little puddle of oil right before the turbo, now iam assuming that the oil line is normal but its extremely shotty work, the oil has a little hint of gas smell but i have a feeling that its left over from before so iam going to change the oil/filter and the o2 sensor tomorow thanks for the reply and let me know what you think about the turbo/filter cause the stock intake tube is here but no air box.

Re: TY Rebuild

If its been modded you probably dont have the stock injectors or chip or who knows what else. Post some pics of your engine. Better yet, maybe we can find some locals that can see what youve got going on.
