ty questions

I am currently looking around to buy a typhoon for the room, looks, and oh yeah...power! The only thing is is that I don't have enough money to keep two cars/trucks at one time. So my questions consist of- Is the maintenance high on ty's? Also, I would be using it as my daily driver. Would that be good or bad or what? I have a 2000 prelude right now, which I love, but I need some more room (i.e. trunk space) for college and other things. Is insurance high on these becuase the insurance for my prelude is very high considering it's classified as a sports car with 2 doors and what not. Yes, I'm 17 so that will add to the cost but I would do almost anything for a typhoon. Thanks. :n00b:

Re: ty questions

Mine is just as bad as any other car, it all depends on the insurance company. I was paying over 1k a year when I got mine when I was 19. It was between 1k-1.5k a year, not too bad for NY at least, about average. My drivng record was ok though. Try to get a quote from your insurance company now, before you get one, to get an idea of what it will be.

Re: ty questions

Sorry to say, but a Ty may not be the best for a DD. If you don't beat on it it will last and be reliable, but when parts break things get expensive. Insurance on SyTys is somewhat steep compared to regular S-10's and Blazers, since they are limited production vehicles and they are quite powerful. There are other young owners on this site, and they love thier trucks, but be prepared to put away some money in the event that a tranny or engine goes, or even a t-case. I'm not trying to discourage you from getting one- SyTys are fun vehicles to own and drive, and are just plain cool- but being the unique vehicles they are, they have special needs. Good luck on getting a Ty! Be sure to post pictures when you find one!

First, A Ty is not the greatest daily driver on the market. They are finiky about everything. Maintenence...You will be on a first name basis with your local parts people. Insurance, according to my insurance agent a Ty is in the same performance class as a viper. Dont get me wrong, I love my Ty. I would use the 'Lude as your daily if at all possible and get a Ty for a toy.

Re: ty questions

What about a Bravada? They may not have the turbo engine, but they do have all the creature comforts, AWD, and look better than an ordinaray Blazer. They also have the room you want, and some power can be extracted from the 4.3 via exhaust, intake, and a chip. Insurance would be cheaper too:2cents:

Re: ty questions

your 17 and going to college, i say find a more reliable vehicle, dont get me wrong i love to drive my sy, but as a DD it gets expensive to put premium fuel in and when things do break, and they will  , they arent cheap either. I bought another honda after i sold my last one and bought the Sy, i save almost enough in gas money by not driving the Sy to pay for the DD civic. If your loaded by the ty, but $ is precious while in school, beer money, wait your only 17, soda/pizza money, the honeys, or buy the Ty and find a cheap older civic or something to drive daily. my :2cents:

or turbo the bravada using sy/ty manifolds and tuning....then you'd have a car thats classified as a grandma tugboat but performs a lot better

I treated my Ty nice for 1.5 years, and it still blew up on me. It takes a LOT of preventative maintenance. Good luck.

Re: ty questions

Ty is my DD, and I go to college. I drive it everywhere, I take care of it. Nothing big has gone on me yet. I'm prepared at all times (almost) to be ready to fork out some cash to fix it. I love it, I think it's worth it. I'd still like to get a better daily driver like a new xtreme, or a Datsun 510 and be able to park the Ty. But no way would I get rid of it, I love my truck.

Re: ty questions

I'd have to say no-go on the whole daily driver thing but thats just my opinion. Are you mechanicly inclined? I just spent 5 hours doing the intercooler line removal mod and in the process managed to pull out some vacume lines. I thought I had fixed them. Truck started up fine. No check engine lights. Went out for a test drive and as soon as I got into boost- BAM! Uh...oh......

So I checked it when I got back and a Vacume line had come undone (the one underneath the throttle body) so now I have to take everything off again to fix it. (and hopefully thats all I did wrong.....)

So Moral of the story- If you buy a Sy/Ty be prepared to wrench on it- and the only people who are going to know anything about how to fix it are- HERE!

Re: ty questions

These trucks are a love/hate type of thing, to buy one while you are in school you would have to be :screwy:. And as a student if you buy one be prepare to spend more money on it then anything else that you would do. That being said, There is nothing more enjoyable than getting behind the wheel of one as it's a guarantee you will have a smile on your face until you have to work on it. Then it a . One more thing you better be the type that does your own wrenching as (they will get costly if you have to pay someone to work on it) .

Re: ty questions

i bought my ty as a daily driver then it forced me to buy another vehicle, so i would say there are better DD out there, keep your prelude and wait till you get older and can afford two vehicles

Re: ty questions

These trucks are nightmares, and get around 14-15 mpg (premium fuel only)

I would imagine that your insurance payment would be stupid high.

If you can find a nice stock never ridden hard truck, you might be okay,if you baby it,but there are so many marginal parts that need to be upgraded that it's not funny.

If you have plenty of funds, then go for it.If you are making 6 bucks an hour, then hell no

My thinking is that you shouldn't do it.You need to be able to handle the worst case scenario that can happen. This includes replacing/rebuilding the complete drivetrain, fixing anything and everything that goes wrong by yourself, and dealing with 10 lbs of shit stuffed into a 5 lb sack.

Re: ty questions

Haha, that's pretty much right. I just don't have to pay to live at home, eat food, or anything besides my car stuff and my personal stuff. My truck is only gettin like 12mpg right now, I gotta get that figured out. So far, the only money I've spent on the truck is for stuff I want to do, like fun stuff, not because it ever broke down on me. Personally, if I had to do it again, I'd probably buy a beater first. Oh well, I'll just have to do things the other way around this time.

Re: ty questions

Listen, buy an SRT-4. It gets great mileage, especially for its power. The insurance may still be steep, but the maint. on it will be next to nill. I drive my Ty as a daily driver, and have not had any problems at all with it. But I do have a little money, and I do replace parts on it before they become a problem. For instance, I've replaced the entire front end parts, minus the control arm bushings, which those are on the list. I've replaced the Distributor, oil sending unit, cap/rotor & wires/plugs. I've put Royal Purple Synthetic in my trans case, and I flush the tranny every 15,000 miles. I run synthetic oil only in it. I"m buying a gilbert propshaft as well. There is just alot of money that you have to spend to keep it up. I LOVE the truck however, and will never get rid of it, unless it is to buy a Sy, which I really love, but I have 2 children right now. So I comprimised, but am not disapointed in the least.

x2 this is prob the only reason I can afford my ty, plus I mostly drive my old blazer to work/school, if I had to rely on the typhoon as my daily driver id be fired months ago lol..

Re: ty questions

thanks guys. that helps a lot. i'm used to paying premium gas so that wouldn't change. it's the the mpg that would. i get 21/26 on the lude so that somewhat helps. on the other hand i pay over 1k on insurance so that wouldn't really change. after hearing what all you guys have said, and only making $6.75/hr., i have decided to wait until i get more money and maybe even till i get out out college to get a ty. although, if i did sell my lude (i could get around 12-13k right now) and bought an 8-9k ty that would give me around 4-5k + the 1k i have in my checking account. i'm still pondering this but hopefully i can get something resolved soon. most likely i will wait until i get enough money to have a DD and a ty. once again thanks for all your help and hopefully i'll see some of you around.

 There ya go! That's smart. Stay in college, study hard, get awesome job when you get out...get stupid rich and be able to afford all kinds of fast cars. Technology is so amazing right now that by the time you have your master's degree, Turbo 4's will be putting out 500 hp and getting 25mpg and will likely NOT leave you stranded. ;)
