Ty in Portland, OR

First post here.

Saw a Ty yesterday driving home from work. Hawthorne Bridge in downtown Portland.

Was the first time I had seen one in a long time.

I still own a '91 LS S-10 (stock, except for stereo, wheels, tonneau cover), and pined for a Sy when I first bought it. Hadn't thought about a Syclone or Typhoon for several years, but the sighting re-kindled my interest a little, which is how I stumbled on the site.

When I noticed this 'sighting' forum, I had to post.

I actually can't even remember the color.

There's so many SyTy's hiding out in Portland it's crazy. Over the years I used to see so many different ones. There's atleast 3 green/grey Ty's in the Clackamas area, handful of Sy's runnin around Vancouver (even a rumored 10 sec one, i've never seen it but have heard about it), a couple white/white in Tigard, lots :)

It would be neat to have a meet in the Portland area sometime. I haven't met any other syty peeps yet.

It may have been me too, I think I was downtown about that time. My Ty is normally my daily driver, but I'll vary between that and my tow rig (F350 crew cab dually) depending on fuel prices between premium and diesel. I ran into another Ty owner about 2 years ago who lived near me in Happy Valley, but I lost his contact info. I'd definitely be up for a get-together one of these days, especially once I finish working on my race car and have the garage cleaned up a bit. I have plenty of space to pull a bunch of trucks around (big driveway, bigger backyard).

Re: Ty in Portland, OR

I'm actually working on two of them, both with Vega bodies. The one which is almost ready for the track is a small-block car with all stock suspension, subframe connectors and 6-point rollbar. I haven't run it since around 1990, and it had a best ET of 11.51. The motor is a bit tired, but I hope to run most of the season before freshening it. After sitting all these years, the stock gas tank rusted out, stock fuel line is clogged with rust, and the spare tire compartment floor (where I had mounted the battery) rusted through. I built up mounts for a fuel cell (including aluminum work surrounding it since NHRA now requires that), and I'm working on tubular battery mounts. Also changing from a mini-spool to a Detroit Locker, since NHRA now requires aftermarket axles if using a spool (and I never really liked having a spool when driving on the street).

The other car is a full tube-chassis Vega (steel roof, ¼-panels and doors) with a big-block. It previously ran 9.50 at Boise, but "only" a best of 9.40 at sea level, since I didn't have enough gear to run it out the back door (in other words, it probably had the power to run 9.0 at sea level with the right gears, and that was with stock iron heads and a mild camshaft). I need to revise the steering linkage to eliminate the flex coupling (NHRA rule change), build new headers, and assemble the motor (481" with Dart Aluminum heads). The heads, intake & cam came off a similar weight car which was running 8.40's, so I'm hoping it is a bit quicker than before.

Regards,
Michael
