Turn-key L35 head package

What would you guys think is a fair price for a turn-key set of good L35 Vortecs (this would be the 1993 thru 95 version, not the '96 and newer)..... mag'd heads, 3 angle, port matched to gaskets, good valves, springs, retainers, keepers, gaskets, and maybe even ARP bolts?
Or, alternately, just the assembled heads without gaskets, bolts.

I'd ask the same question on here but people seem to dismiss the L35's too easily here...

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

Rob, I used L35 and I am sure happy with my resolts. I went ahead and ported them and used bigger valves. Of course I did put a cam in when I rebuilt the engine. As far as power all I can say is wow. And It is not fully tuned yet.

Are they as good as the newer vortec? We know they are not. Can you buy the L35 heads for about the price people are spending just to do the mods to make vortec heads work? Probably pretty close.

I am guessing you are looking for a great engine for your truck for street driving, Not a all out race car.

But after watching Mr, qbn's video maybe you can have both.

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

stock valves? as in size and quality? it would cost over 300 to have that done at a shop I think 400 would be a great deal depending on materials used new oversize valves, etc etc the price goes up, add 202 160 valves and Id be at 600 I dont think 96 and newer are worth it when you compare gains to cost

It's just a six

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

When you are forcing air/fuel through the cylinder heads,if you have aprox the same size windows, port size, the heads will produce close to the same ammount of power.
L35's or Vortecs they will be close to the same power when super/turbo charging.

Normally aspirated, that is when you will see the bigger difference in power. The 96 & newer Vortecs have a better port layout, the chambers help ,but it's not a huge difference in power because of the chambers.:2cents:

If you want a set of L35's ,bigger vlaves (I would not use 2.02"s more of a tendacy to crack & the flow difference would not be much if @ all by say using a 1.98- ,2.00" valve), just turn down a 2.02 valve to these sizes.

I would @ least get the bowls ported & work on the short turn radius @ the minimum to keep the costs down, or do some of the work yourself,,, but get a book or talk w/people who know how to port before you go on that route.

Stock heads to mild ported heads w/springs,ARP studs etc, can range form $300- $ 1200 complete as a guess.

FWIW You can get a complete cylinder head from the yard for $33.50 plus $5 core charge. ( Could have 50 miles or 500, 000 miles on them)

That is the route I took. And that is good if you are wanting to rebuild a set.

But I the ones Rob found a set already rebuilt and can probably buy for a good price.

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

The reason I was asking, guys, is that I haven't seen anyone doing L35 packages and thought I might buy some cores and start selling them - rebuilt and complete. I have a really good head guy that builds the engines for the guy I sponsor (http://zddppluscentral.com/the_daily_blog_).
I thought that if I could provide a service with turn-key L35's and make some bucks doing it, it would help us all out. It would definitely be cheaper and easier than going the Vortec route.

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

I ended up paying 600 bucks for a more or less ready set of L35's with 2,02 and 1,6 valves and some porting done to them, very happy with the power they produce and the fact that no mods to the rest of the setup was required, if I am to build another motor 350-400 of a rebuild set of L35's dont sound to bad, a set with soime work I would pay450-500, and very good work is worth more.

I have Ported L35 Heads with Ceramic coated combustion chambers, intake & exhaust ports. Heads have stainless valves. ( 1.95 intake & 1.55 exh.) screw in studs, 1.6 Crane Gold Race Extruded self-aligning rocker arms. The springs are 130 lb seat and 340 lb at .500 lift. Closer to $2000 for this set up. Worth every penny!

I would be interested if the price was fair. Subscribed.

Wyo, You must have been just as impressed as I was at the amount of power the motor that cambel built that had l35 heads, custom cam and a 20g turbo.

I would be interested in some l35 heads.

Yup, for guys doing mid-level builds it seems to be the perfect (less expensive) choice. The '96 and up Vortecs would show a definite improvement on a naturally-aspirated engine.. not so much on ours. It seems the L35's provide the reduction in knock that we really need to take advantage of.

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

Tough to say... a mild ported, decently prepped set of L35s in the 500-600 range would be popular, I think.

When you add up the cost of rebuilding vortecs and working a manifold, you'd have a really hard time beating the above.

Of even more value, would be a cam/heads/60# injector/specific turbo bin that would work with it all.
People try to mix/match parts, and don't match the tune to what they have.

Re: Turn-key L35 head package

I would spend 450-to 550 on such a thing in a heartbeat

I concur. If these materialize, I may have to reconsider going vortec on my build when I get around to it...
