Turbo Project

I'm thinking of ways to implicate a turbo project for a Quad 4.

Does anyone here see any problem with using an EXTRA thick copper headgasket to lower the compression of a motor for a turbo setup?

The pistons are flat and the rods and crank are forged right from the factory. The bottom end is plenty strong and can hold upwards of 16 psi on a 8.5 to 1 setup. (stock is 10 to 1 compression with a .047 thick headgasket).

I'm also planning on ARP studs and maybe even o-ring the block.

What do you think?

How thick would it have to be. prolly .098 to .108 thick.

If you have the engine measurements, http://syclone.invisibill.net/enginecalc.html will let you tinker with stuff and figure out just how thick of a head gasket you'd need. The stock SyTy setup is 8.3 to 1 with a .040 head gasket. Even going down to a .001 gasket, it only goes up to 9.1 to 1. You're going to need a lot of gasket to lower it from 10 down to 8.5...

The thickness would have to .111.

I inputed the info into your calculator and thats what showed up.(8.487 to 1 compression)

from what i've read, heard and seen, reducing the compression with a gasket is the worst way to go

do it right with pistons!
GM had a quad 4 turbo for a pace car and it made about 300 hp from mostly off the shelf internals

I also wonder why gm had to redesign the engine to its current form in the cavalier etc

hmmm... if a 4.3 fits in a fiero maybe.... or go 3800 turbo

The problem is, very few race teams still use the Quad 4 (the new ecotech is lighter and CAN be just about as powerful). Mantapart.com, as well as a few selct other companies make parts nowadays. Back in the day, GM was by far the best source for performance parts for the quad 4 (rocket parts catalog).

Parts come at a premium cost (probably not as much as you sy/ty guys but more than I want to spend on a four cylinder). $650 for 4 forged pistons is a bit rediculas. Especially for a motor that is 15 years old. Honda guys can go out and buy bolt on kits and engine internals for a fraction of the price.

As my car stands it can barely beat most of the older type R's and Si models. I'm 2 wins and 2 loses versus the new Civic Si. THAT PISSES ME OFF. The quad 4 is a much superior motor, my cars weight and gearing is the only thing holding me back. The W41 quad 4 in a 1992 Calais 442 runs a mid to low 14 second quarter mile stock. (faster than MOST stock V8 mustangs) in a 4 cylinder that gets 35 miles per gallon on the highway. This motor only put out 10 more horsepower and some better gearing.

Believe it or not, ALOT of imports and Hot Rods are dropping quad 4's in their high performance setups. check out quad4rods.com they make a RWD conversion.

They redesigned the motor to make it less noisey and smoother. Thusly killing all the performance from the motor. Its funny, my favorite saying from I beleive it was Motor Trend,

"The Quad 4 is about as subtle as a sledge hammer"
