turbo problem

I just finished installing a stage 1 turbo in my typhoon. It produces the same amount of boost as the stock one but it takes a lot longer to build it. Is there any way to correct this problem? maybe adjust the wastegate?

Re: turbo problem

Does not look like a "big" turbo. Could the actuator setting be too loose? How much pre-load does it have? There's not a big discription of the turbo size or specs... which isn't helpfull. I'd guess your spool time would only change 2-300rpm by looking at it.

If your using the factory boost controller your boost won't change just by installing a larger turbo.
I use the boost controllers made by this guy www.RJCracing.com Look at the boost controller.
Brings boost up quicker because it does not allow the actuator to move till you get to set boost level.
Good luck,
Scott~

Re: turbo problem

I have that very same turbo and didn't have any problems with spool up or boost.. just fitment. I did have to adjust the wastegate a bunch of times to find the boost I was looking for though so I'd start there.

Also from what i've been told the turbo is a "to4b h trim"

Re: turbo problem

to adjust the wastegate i just have to turn the nut in about 3 turns and then take the clip off and turn it until it reaches the nut and put it back on?

The stock boost control logic in the factory ecm can do this also and does from factory. No doubt it can be tuned and adjusted for better spool, but that feature is nothing stock cant do with a little tuning.

Re: turbo problem

I tried to adjust the waste gate today by shortening the rod by about 3 turns. (I don’t have my aftermarket boost gauge in yet, so all of these readings are from the stock one). At idle the vacuum is about 8 (middle of the green). It spools up great not but once I reach the max boost on the gauge it starts to sputter a little. Was the caused because I over adjusted the waste gate?

What else has been done to the truck? (Fuel mods, chip, ignition?)

Re: turbo problem

You really shouldn't mess with the boost level until you get an aftermarket gauge hooked up because the stock one is soo useless it's sad. Sputtering in these trucks can be anything but useally end up being ignition parts ie plugs, wires cap and rotor when was the last time you tuned it up and what kind of plugs and gap did you use? how's your fuel pressure?

You might want to concider reaching out to a syty owner that's local to you that has a scan tool so you can see what's really going on inside that truck

Re: turbo problem

The truck is stock besides for an exhaust. I just did a tune up about a month ago and the sputtering just started after I adjusted the wastegate. If anyone in/close to central jersey would like to take a look at it, I will drive it to you.

Is it possible your getting too much boost and your over boosting?? does the "check engine" light come on at all when this occurs?

Re: turbo problem

No check engine light comes on. Its not a powerful sputter, just a slight one. Do you think i should try and readjust the wastegate? Maybe make the rod longer by 1-2 turns?

Ok. The stock chip and fuel system won't handle that turbo.

You'll need to get yourself a better fuel pump, and a chip that's programmed for that turbo.
You're also on the border as far as needing larger injectors.

Re: turbo problem

I talked to Mike from RPM before buying this turbo and he told me i could run this on a stock truck

Re: turbo problem

I had it on a stock truck. Ran great. did better with a 2500 stall but boosted good with the stock TC. Faster then stock. But I am using a greedy controler. Worked way better with the A2A setup. I liked it so much I upgraded to the stage 2. I set the rod 1/2 turn past all the way in so it had a bit of preload on it.

"Stock Truck" means a lot of different things to different people.

I can't speak for Mike, but I'm guessing he meant in terms of motor internals. Not a 100% stock truck.

I can pretty much guarantee that the stock WG logic won't like that turbo. And without some additional fuel, the extra air that turbo is pushing will seriously shorten the lifespan of your motor.

True but if you ask him what modifications you should have to help support the added cfm he'll tell you at very least a walbro 255 fuel pump, adjustable fuel pressure regulator and if you plan on using more boost then the stock 14.5 you should go with a 3bar map and chip

What are your mods so i have an idea on where to start,

well my mods are like this

rpm stage 1 turbo (to4b h trim)
diy front mount a2a
afpr
walbro fp
taylor spiro pro wires
ngk ur5 plugs
conrad cap/rotor
3 bar map
custom 3 bar chip (slightly more aggressive then a t2-18 setting)
3inch exhuast
3inch hi flow cat
electric exhaust cutout on dp
dynomax flowpath muffler
innovative lm1 wideband
vdo boost gauge
cyberdyne electric fuel pressure gauge
two gauge pillar pod
devilsown meth kit
datamaster software

but I would say you need a walbro pump, afpr to run at very least.. if you want more boost then stock which you will then you should look into a 3bar chip and map sensor.. or be on the safe side and up the injectors when you get the chip so you can have the chip calibrated to the new injector size. 50lbers are a very common upgrade for injectors on mild builds.
