i thought there was a discussion about this awhile back, searched but didnt find it. was looking into trickle chargers for my cars over winter and sleds over summer cause im sick of buying batteries every couple years.. they vary greatly in price and i am somewhat of a believer in you get what you pay for. however harbor freight has a trickle charger for $9.00 and some change. anyone try these ?? are they worth buying ?? or just cheap junk ?? my buddy has three on his cars and swears by them. i just worry being gone five days a week and coming home to a burned down garage.

I used northern tool and bought a solar panel trickle charger. I purchased the smaller 14w solar cell charger. It Works inside and outside. Also will plug into ciggarette lighter and backfeed. Comes with mini suction cups to install on inner winshield or outer. For the price,You cant beat it with a bat. I have had no problem with it yet.(been outside for about 6 mons)

I have six battery tender jrs and probably been using them for about 4 years now. Search Amazon, they're like $25 or less with free shipping.

I have used a Battery Tender Plus on the syclone for the past 10 years with flawless results. Aftermarket stereo drains it. I have at least a half dozen harbor freight $7 specials I use on other stuff.. Sometimes ok, sometimes they fail. The battery tender plus was $90 I think but money well spent.

I now have a c-tek battery charger. The model I have also has a mode for gell battery like optima's.

I used to have a cheap trickle charger and I happen to notice an electrical burnin smell one day I was in the garage (during the winter). I threw it away. It was only the 2nd year that I owned it. I would have been pissed if that POS damaged my car. I wouldn't trust any of the cheap Chinese trickle chargers with my truck. If you insist on using a cheap trickle charger pull the battery and put it in a safe spot.

Optimal are Absorbent Glass Mat batteries that are spiral lead cell batteries not a gel battery... Had a customer bring in a 12 year old optima the other day. Just wanted to get a new one even though it tested out fine. That's my back up / electrical testing battery at the store now. I'll see how long it lasts.
