trashed transfer case???

took apart my transfer case and the inside didn't look so hot. Had little pieces of metal all on the inside. The cause was the race for the output shaft had spun and ended up chewing up the metal on the casing.

What I am wondering is if that can be reapired or do I need a new output side casing. Or possibly just a new transfer case being as I had a bunch of metal anyways?

From what I've read in all manual supplements, the transfer case is a remove and replace item only. But surely someone knows how-to repair it. Just the question of it's worth the trouble / money. Probably cheaper to buy a new / used one. Same as the GMC Astro if I'm not mistaken.

My tranny guy was in the process of rebuilding a Bravada transfer case when he did my tranny. The viscous coupling is a sealed unit, but I think you can rebuild the rest of it. Not sure if I'd trust it with all that metal in there though... Might spend more replacing a bunch of parts than you would just replacing it...

Did some calling while Don was at work.

input shaft $130
Case $140
rebuild kit $125

So I guess we will be checking out the boneyards for a T-case. Called a couple local ones and they are selling Tcases for $140. Hopefully we can find a Astro or early Bravada. Anyone know which one has the correct splines on the output shaft?
Yeah Search Ownz..... I am about to go do that so no smartass comments. :wink:

thanks blu, but i had already read those, i think mine is a little for far gone. I will have to replace half of the casing to repair plus the chances of the metal messing up any other bearing and stuff. not worth it in the long run.
