THE SHIFT FROM FIRST TO SECOND SEEMS TO SHIFT REALLY EARLY SOME WERE AROUND 3500 OR SO,AND ALSO SECOND TO THIRD SHIFTS EARLY AT WOT.TV CABLE IS ADJUSTED WRIGHT ALSO, WHAT NEXT TRANSMISSION IS FAIRLY NEW NOT THAT MUCH TIME IS ON IT.I ALSO HAVE 4.10 GEARS IS THAT SOME HOW AFFECTING MY PROBLEM

Uh, that may be a problem. You don't need gears that low with a low revving torque motor like the syty.

I hope you have them in the front and rear at least so you don't hurt any parts.

Get some stock gears in there asap. Did you put the 4.10's in? Previous owner?

YES I HAVE THEM IN BOTH ENDS. THE ONLY REASON FOR THIS IS, I HAVE 18IN WHEELS AND IT LOWERED THE OVERALL RATIO SO I PUT THEM IN

you have changed the gears then u must also change the governor in the tranny....it wont shift right until u do.....

you will probably need to get the B&M adjustable gov kit so that you can adjust it yourself. the reason being. you cat get one for a 4.10 gear but..it's going to shift around 4500 I would imagine...I don't think GM has a 5000K gov for 4.10 gears. you could try the 83 corvette gov. whick is 5k but its for 3.42's.so you would prob only see 4500....

what you could also do if you dont want to spend the $$$ is just lighten the springs in yours.....I would use a 1/4 drill bilt and drill a hole in the center of each fly weight.

will the b&m one fix some of my problem or should i just tighten the springs. Are there any other options. do i have to take the pan off to do these procedures, and also when you said to drill holes in each fly weight what do you mean, could you explain that to me.is this B&M thing available from summit? Thanks for the help.

the governor is located under the rusty metal cover on the drivers side of the case...does NOT require removing the pa...the way to increase the RPM at shift is to lighten the flyweights...do this by drilling holes in them....the B&M would fix this but you would have to expriment with the springs...this is just the Free way to do it

how much would you start taking of the flyweights at a time. The truck is down right now so i can't drive it and see how much i need to take of them, but as soon as i do i will drop u an email and let you know.If you have any other helpfull info let me know.

Thanks for the help.

like I said use a 1/4 drill bit and make 1 hole in each of the weights then just experiment

what size tires did you put on the sy/ty. There are some 18 that will work why not use those and keep stock gears. They will have little side wall but will be correct.just a thought.

The stock wheels are 16" with a 50 series sidewall. You put 18's with a 45 series sidewall on. You actually raised the overall diameter, if that's what you meant. I don't think it was raised enough to warrant replacing your gears however. Go with lower profile tires. Get a 30 or 35 series sidewall and that may help things.

Is there a formula that calculates effective gear ratio based on what tires you have? I would play around with different tire sizes and see if that gets you back to stock gearing so you can get rid of those 4.10's.

If it lowered your gear ratio, why didn't you put higher gears in? 4.10's and up are low gears to me since they have no top end. Higher gears are 3.23 and below because they are still driveable with good top end pull.

This make any sense?

The 18's with the big sidewall like i have are bigger in diameter than the stock stuff,so it made the gear lower, so i put the 4.10's in to composate. I dont think its that far of

I have a 255/45 on them other gears are already in
Is that the same size as the Vettes? It seems like a good size to me. I would not go any thinner unless your talking something like a 315/35ZR18 or something that wide because any thinner than 2 inches of side wall rides like shit and will probally bend your expensive rims the first time you hit a pot hole. What is that calculated forfula for figuring effective gear ratios? I have the stock 3.73's up front but want to mount a 4.11 posi with discs off a "97 Trams Am. It is only $250.00 and would be much cheaper then bolt on discs and a posi locker. And since the stupid offset is different I can't rotate front and rear anyway so why not run wide ass 18's or maybe even 20's out back with a skinny 17 or 18 up front? I need that formula!!!

if you have a 255/45, your sidewall will be 45 percent of 255mm tall, which should be about 114.75mm sidewall, i have 245/40 on my 18s in the front and 275 /35in the back and they are the same as the stock sy wheels , had them all side by side off the truck and maybe a 4mm difference. I personally feel you should go back to stock gears as well, these trucks make so much torque that a little taller tire than stock actually helps , why do you think they put 33 inch tires on funny cars and dragsters, plus a inch difference is not enuff to warrant changing to 4.10 gears. I put 37 inch tires on my crew cab duramax, it came with 28inch tires, and i did not change the gears, just added exaust , chip, and air filter and you cant even tell the difference now, bottom line, 4.10 gears are way to much gear for these things.
