Transmission Question

What are the symptoms of a broken or dieing transmission? My old Blazer's has been acting funny lately, think it might be the 180k miles that've been put on the transmission.

The first thing that tipped me off that my tranny was broken was that my truck wouldnt move and there was a knock comming from my transmission. Other then that I would look for shift slips.

Mine was backwards...
It did not make noise did not slip going forward, but when I let of the gas in 1-2-or D it was like neutral or OD.
There was no engine braking at all. It was like shifting into neutral.
Then stepping back on the gas would result in a windup and a hard hit once the trans RPM caught up to speed.
My shift into OD was sponge soft but I don't think i have ever felt a truck that shifted hard into OD.

I swapped mine out for a mild rebuiilt trans out of a totalled Sy while I rebuild my oem to some killa specs with killa parts.

Hey Jas', How're you and Heather doin'?

The symptoms you describe, the "lack of enging braking" has plagued me for the last couple of years. I went to downshift, and it was like I put it in neutral....

I spoke to a few people, and it seems as though it is my OverRun Clutch? Everthing else works great. I've even taken it to the track and ran consistent 13.4's and 13.5's all day. They said if I didn't have metal shavings (and I didn't), I could keep driving it till it quit, or till I wanted to pay and have it fixed. 97k miles and still ticking....

btw, what kind of parts did you put in your OEM rebuild tranny, and who'd you have do it? A local shop, a chain shop, or a race tranny specialist?

Hey Doug - I've had the same thing on mine for at least 3 years. 110K and still going. I am kinda in the same boat as you - no sense rebuilding it until I can't go forward.

When my tranny went out (only time so far), it did the same thing as you guys. No engine braking and no "clunk" at 2-1 shift when in D. Otherwise, it ran fine. Raced the hell out of it like that, but only 'cause I knew she was ruint (GA word). Forward sprag sheared all the teeth off to finally park her.

It sure was fun to beat the hell out of her like that though :D .....not that I've stopped or anything.

I have the same problem No engine braking. Also it likes to drop out of 4th sometimes at highway speed when I let off of it. It is very finicky about TV cable position. I have to slid the cable to the right a bit from normal setting so that it will drive normally but the first time I go WOT the cable pulls out. After that it hunts between 3 and 4 at highway speed and when you let off it drops to third. Open the throttle again and it revs up to 3rd gear RPM then promptly shifts to 4th. This is a GM warranty replacement that I go just before 01Nats. It has never shifted like the original and for the last year has had the problem described above. I have been trying to kill it completely with 15psi launches so that when I take it back in they will put a brand new tranny in. Then when I get it home I am going to dissasemble it and put it some Hartman parts I have. This thing won't die!
I have a lot of very hard launches on it just ask a couple of the TX sytyers.
We did 2 back to back 15 psi launches the other night.
Anyone want to take bets on how many more?????? :D

well that kind of sounds like me, except I have never had any engine breaking in OD, its always felt like it was freewheeling, the only difference now is that when I'm on the freeway in OD and I gas it, it downshifts fine, but if I let the gas off quick it kinda double-clunks back into OD. Also if I have cruise control on while going downhill it feels like its jerking a bit instead of riding smoothly down the hill. Upshifting and driving at low speed is perfect, 1-2 is hard as ever, its only on the freeway that I feel anything weird. Does this sound like something is on its way out?

Doesn't sound too wierd.

You will never have engine braking in OD, but you should in all the lower gears.

Your Cruise will always act funny especially up and down hills.

Doug, H and I are doin great for an old married couple. She helped me drop the trans to start out this project.

And my new trans was purchased out of a totalled Syclone.
We know it has the ATSG updates done to it as well as a Hartmann .500"TV valve and input shaft check ball delete. 3k stall TCS 9.11 should let it bang through the gears pretty good.
Dunno who built it so I have little fiath in it lasting.

My plan for my OEM trans is to put together a list of the ultimate parts available over the counter without gettin graped and learn to assemble it myself.

Mine is definitly weird. Drops to idle at highway speeds when you let off the gas Never had a 700 do this.
