Transmission noise/shutter?

Hey guys I'm having some trans problems and hoping that it's nothing too serious. To start when i start my Ty and back it out of the driveway in the morning there is a serious tapping in reverse then when i shift to drive it stops.

Also a while ago(3 months) it started sounding like it didn't want to shift into 4th i thought that it felt like it was in 4th but it didn't sound like it then after a week or so that went away and now it shutters at about 2000rpm. If i tap the brake like some of the ealier posts that i found said to it does go away.

So i was looking for opinions on what all the issues might be and maybe a list of things to look into from cheapest to most expensive. I hear that these tranny's are really expensive to replace.

Your shutter is indicative of the torque converter - mine acted the same way - twice. Sounds like you need an trans overhall.

Whatever you do, buy a high quality TC, because you will only have to do it again...

Could you disable the TC lock up function to see if it is truly the TC? Unplug the electrical connection on the driver's side of the tranny?

TCC has nothing to do with reverse. Furthermore it isn't even active in low gears (where you'd be backing out of the driveway).

I have seen a t-case exhibit similar symptoms... but if the tapping is engine speed, it's likely not good news for the trans.

Might check to see if there are loose fuel lines or a torque arm causing the tapping, too.

Take it and have them do a pressure check on it. Dave mentioned some things that you can reference a chart to see where things are doing what at certain times. If they see pressure drops or hear certain sounds during specific periods, that will isolate what the problem is. Normally, if a converter fails, you need to do a rebuild. The trans is a closed hydraulic system. If you hear metal pinging, that mean two pieces are striking each other. The 700 is pretty neat. I've had units that I've remanned that have all there gears but just slip and on teardown find metal to metal with all the clutch material GONE from the 3-4's. Lot of busted overrun pistons and seal blown apart on the overrun piston. Some cracked drums, broken input shafts, reaction carrier shafts, sun shells, flared out reverse drum from neutrals, etc.
Get a good converter and have them rebuild it and REPLACE whatever parts are worn or broken.

Thanks for all the responses!

DaveP: I'm pretty sure that it is engine braking but just to make sure I will check the engine braking on my way home today. I have a new filter, gasket, and fluid so i can drop the pan and check/replace this weekend. I will post what i find.

pinellas50: I will try that and see what happens. How long can i drive it with that unplugged?

turbodig: While I'm under changing filter i will look for that.

George Blake: I will call around to some Tranny shops for pressure testing. I'm not sure if we have any good tranny shops around here (Arvada,Co) so i will have to try my luck. What is a good price for your average tranny rebuild? I'm sure the price would very alot depending on the problems. Is it recommended to rebuild a converter or buy a new one? This is my daily driver. I don't race or anything like that. My Ty has 135,000 miles on it and i have had it since it had 65,000. It's all stock as far as i know.

Re: Transmission noise/shutter?

If your not gonna race it everyday, I can do a regular rebuild for $1250 and a new stock style converter for $360.00. If your gonna beat on it though, I have to do everything else to it (reaction shaft, sprag, sun gear shell, all of that).

George Blake: What's shipping(ball park) on this going to be from 80005 to you and back?

Yep. 700 doesn't weigh anything. I usually just carry them around when I work on them. Of course I weigh 245 pounds and I'm 6'4" but they really aren't that bad. The converter may put it over and have to be shipped separate. If it does, I highly recommend you have someone help you seat it, or flat take it to a shop to seat the converter. I'll have to dyno the converter and the trans together but I'll pull it back apart if need be for shipping.
Looks like just under $90 one way for DHL.

Re: Transmission noise/shutter?

OK Thanks DaveP I understand what that means now and good info I'm the type that would put this back together myself and now that i know this i will have it seated by a pro. before hand.

I checked the engine braking today to make sure that it was braking in all gears and it is.

And just to clairify the rapid tapping in reverse, It just does that first thing in the morning. The shuttering is when i am going down the road at speed and not speeding up or slowing down. Maybe i will try to unplug the TC lockup wire on the tranny tomorrow and see if anything changes.

Re: Transmission noise/shutter?

What does it mean to seat the converter?

You can read up on it here. As DaveP mentioned, it is CRITICAL that the torque converter is seated properly during the install. Last year this happened to a few owners so it a VERY easy mistake to do. The result of a crushed pump due to an improperly seated torque converter is that transmission will have to come back out as soon as the bell housing bolts are tightened...
