Transfercase quickie

Got the transfercase out just an hour ago.

When i tilted it after removal it just flooded oil from the rear axel output!?
Is that normal? Or is a gasket toast?
It was also oil between tranny and transfercase.

Yeah, i didn't drain it cause it thought it would do me good after christmas to handle the extra weight

oil or tranny fluid? I might be alittle on the tired side here but isn´t the same fluid thats supposed to de used in both tranny and t-case?
I use that.

I doesn´t got a bubby to help me with my TY so its a one man job getting the case and tranny down. I used ratchet tie-downs under the t-case *edit* between the swaybars so it wouldn´t hit me. Worked really good lowering it down with it to.

If you will put a spare tranny yoke in the T-case out put this will prevent the fluid from making a mess. The fluid that you get from the T-case/T-case adapter area is tranny fluid.
The way to keep this to a minimum is to put a drain plug in the tranny pan and drain the
tranny when the T-case is removed.

i was just thrown off by calling it oil. i thought you meant there was 10w30 motor oil in there. my bad.

i managed to drop the transfer case by myself once it was emptied of fluid. will probably need a hand getting it back in once i'm ready.

you will be able to put it in alone, if you have it on a carlift..

Yeah , I did it wrong. should have drained the tranny first but didnt have at big enought Tupperware at home right now. Just wanted to do some wrenching today :D

So all in all my t-case is most likely healthy.

Canadian did you do any maintence on the t-case?

Not on the Sy case. It's going back in as-is. I do have a Ty transfer case that I pulled apart. The only parts I can find online to replace are the chain and bearings, etc. No real hard parts that I've found. Dealer might be the only place to get it. I noticed that the rear sun gear (IIRC) was a little stiff to turn around. Was thinking about replacing that and getting a new chain/rebuild kit.

That'll probably happen down the road a ways.

You can drain the transmission pan (I do everytime I pull a trans) however, there will still be plenty of ATF in there to hose you if you let the back of the transfer case drop down. It don't hold all that much ATF, 3 pints or 1.5 quarts is all it takes to fill it up.

Usually old fluid looks like oil though, as typically it doesn't get changed often.

GRIN..

FYI stuff.

The trans and tranfer case do NOT share the same fluid even though they both use the same type of fluid. The xfer case has a seal in the front to keep the trans fluid out and the xfer case fluid in. Basically they dont swap spit (ewww) but there is nothing to seal the rear of the xfer case once you take out the rear drive shaft. FWIW the xfer case fluid lubes the splines on the drive shaft yoke/output shaft so once the drive shaft is removed the fluid has nice huge hole to drain out on you and/or the floor.

Drain the xfer case using the drain plug on the back side opposite the front drive shaft output yoke. All youll need is a 3/8" ratchet to remove the plug. This gets most all the fluid out of it.

As was mentioned use an old drive shaft yoke or the plastic plug thingy available at any chain auto parts store to keep the fluid from running out when you take the rear drive shaft out if you dont want to drain the case. I dont do this since it makes it even harder to wrangle the xfer case out but I do use one to keep garbage out of the xfer case while its on the garage floor.

When you first split the trans/xfer case youll get some fluid that comes out thats from the trans. Have rags or a drip pan ready cause other than jacking the rear of the truck ~3' in the air over night to drain the fluid back into the trans pan theres nothing you can do to stop it.

Either make sure you have plenty of cat litter or oil dry on hand or be prepared to make a trip to the parts store to get some cause youll need it. I dont think Ill ever get all the trans fluid off my garage floor  .
