HELP!!! - terrible vibration diagnosed as damaged transfer case chain & gears.
Are there any upgrades and/or hypo parts?
Anything special to be aware of?
The repairs are being done by a quality shop but no Sy/TY experience

Does it seem like it the chain is jumping teeth during a boosted launch or hard 1st to 2nd shifting? Does the noise come from near your seat? Chain stretch is a fairly common failure point for the T-case. When mine went through, there was no vibration problem. Just chain jumping - this can be managed for a while by easy driving.

I don't think I would accept that diagnosis without digging a little deeper. How about the prop shaft or the front drive shafts?

Transfer Case

Transfer Case

According to the manual, the Trans Case is not repairable. I snapped the chain on mine, fortunately on warranty, and GM put a new one in. Woulda cost me at least $3K. So, I would beware that they might be setting U up 4 that.

I agree w George - exhaust all other possibilities. Also, it might real tough to get a used one since I think it's SyTy AWD specific. Unless U can find one of the real Hotrod guys on our list who went 2WD and has a spare case.

The transfer case IS repairable. Someone posted a company that rebuilds them. Safaris/early Bravadas are another source for T-cases.

transfer case update

transfer case update

Thanks for the imput so far,
Does anyone have the info for the rebuild company?
Prop shaft was replaced 18 mo ago w/ Dynatech shaft. When the original shaft broke it took out the transmission.

The current vibration was so bad I couldn't go above 20 mph.
The shop pulled the shaft and the vibration went away,
The trans shpo that tore it down says parts are avaliable from GM, but the total cost is around $2,800.
Any options or hypo parts?

Thanks again

The t-case is repairable. When mine was going I spoke to Brian Hartman about options. The replacement of the chain and sprockets is pretty straight forward. Brian recommended Morse Hyvo chain and sprockets (gears if you prefer) as the strongest replacements. Opie's CD will provide you with good guidance.

I was fortunate to find a brand new t-case at a great price from another lister. So my old one is just waiting for me to get around to splitting it.

There is a difference between the Sy case and the Ty case. The Bravada cases do work. I found the going price for a used, un-rebuilt one to be around $400. New, from the factory, best "good guy" price from a local dealer at $1600.

I really think your vibration is coming from something else though.

replacing the chain and gear set is easy. you can even do it while it'
s still installed in the truck. replacing the clutch is a bit more involved. new viscous clutches run about 1k. but you can find one in an old bravada or astro for 2-300 for the whole case and swap it into yours.

I believe the Sy t-case is specific to the Sy because of the size of the flange that mates to the rear drive shaft. Using a Ty case on a Sy requires a Ty drive shaft.

George, I have those symptoms (pop/clunking under the seat during boost-up and hard shift to second). If the chain is suspect, can it be confirmed bad by removing the propshaft and seeing if the noise goes away? I would think that the chain cant jump if there isnt any torque being transmitted through an unloaded transfer case.

That sure sounds like the chain. You can get underneath the truck with it up on stands and move a front wheel back and forth. Just see where the backlash ends. If it is in the t-case, you should be able to hear the chain loading and unloading.

I think I found the # for the chain. 15963558. $283 through GM Parts Direct. Someone correct me if you've got a different number. Think I'll give it a stab next month.

thats doesnt seem like the right # for the viscous clutch. I remember it being ~1k ....hence getting a astro or bravada case and robbing the clutch....

Actually, I found the number under 92 Safari, Borg Warner 4472 transfer case. The chain retials for $496 and is being sold through the site for $283 (as per the site). I actually expected it to be a bit more. I through it out there to see if anyone could validate the info

When I was analyzing my situation I spoke to Brian Hartman. He recommended securing Hyvo chain and sprockets (gears if you desire) as they would provide a superior product to the stock stuff. I never looked that far because I was able to get a brand new T-case for a very reasonable amount of $$$.

I would call around to your local auto supply houses and ask for Hyvo by name. Morse is a very powerful name in the power transmission business. Hyvo chain drives are used in a lot of applications besides automotive. You may find better pricing once you have identified what you want outside of the GM part numbers.

Good luck.

Hello

After an engine swap and having the Same problems as the cracking/klicken noises, i aslo geussed it was the Transfer cas.
I belive they cost $1600 new.
So i swapped the transfercase and took a look at the oil. it was all black.
So i inspected my other T-case (used) and it looked pretty clean red to me.
So i think black oil will also indicate the enlargement of the chain.

i have also heard that rebuilding an T-case will cost approx $700

So i have a Typhoon, wich i never drove it in a Good condition, beacuese i have to work out some vacuumlines problems.
Does annybody has an good scemetic for me??
