Transfer case questions

Just doing a little reasearch for a project I'd like to build someday, and I know a few of you have studied these transfer cases and maybe know what I'm looking for.

Will the AWD transfer case bolt up to a T-5 like a regular 4x4 case? Is there any differences I should be aware of, like spline count or bolt pattern?

What about a T-56?

Basically, I like my Ty a lot, but I've grown to like the look of the Sy. And I miss some things about the Firebird I sold to get the Ty. So someday, I want to build a S-15/S-10 with a big torquey SBC, manual tranny, and AWD.

Just a daydream for now. Workin' on making my Ty right for the moment.

Thanks!

i am doing a similar project (partwise anyways) trying to get the 4472 to bolt up to the t56. i have called a number of places trying to find an adapter. i know it can be done, because summit racing put this combo in their quadra-duce that they made several years back.

QuadraDeuce used a Richmond six speed if my memory is working today.

Chances are if it'll bolt up to a T-5, it'll bolt up to a T-56 with only minor fabrication. But I've also heard that the T-56 interferes with a frame crossmember or something in the full size 4x4, and it may be an issue for us as well.

Too much rumor, not enough fact. :(

not trying to argue, but i did do some checking around and calling summit a while back. it is a t56 and it was removed for a 700r4 trans and a weaker motor. it is supposedly sitting around somewhere there at summit, but no one knows anything about who did the work. i tried marketing and engineering, and whoever else they transfered me to.

heres a writeup on the #2, but it mentions the t56 in the original

t-case, etc

t-case, etc

This is something I've pondered as well, a big power AWD V8 truck. Something in the range of 600hp/600ftlbs big block or small block. I was thinking like a stripped down S series truck, or mabye a fullsize. Check out GM's prototype, The Coolside II, why can't they build that!!!!! Anyway the main problem I see is that the drivetrain in an S truck can't handle it. The t-case in my 93' phoon failed (shattered the planetaries) so I dont think it would hold up to that kind of power on a prolonged basis. We know the 700R4 has problems even at our power levels in an AWD vehicle. GM's 7.6" rear and 7.2" IFS probably won't hold up either. That's why I was thinking fullsize, here's the combo, big block, 4l80e, and the transfer case used in the coolside a new process AWD case. It would basically just be a coolside I replica (the coolside truck has been around for awhile coolside I was the last body style, II the current). Find out more about that new process AWD case, I think I heard/read that the GMC sierra C3 uses some kind of AWD T-case, mabye this case?

Thx Brad

There are alot of trucks out there making 600hp and more than 600 torque with the stock transfer case, rear, and front axle. :D
