transfer case issue im pretty sure

Hey guys i have a buddy who has a ty he brought it by for me to look it over tuesday .he had complained about a sorta clicking noise when driving it at a slow speed.
i decided to test tc by boost launching it slightly well it got up to around1500 rpms for bout a quick second or so and then i didnt hear any noise thetruck went from holding boost to.automatically spinning just the rear tires thus leaving me to think itsthe tc.

Now my question is what could be the broken part thats inside tc thats badplaneteries, gear ,bearings, or vc? Truck has 75k mileson it. I just dont want it to be one of the more expensive parts in tc cause he hardly has funds to start to repair. I know i wont knowexactly till its tore down just wanted to see if anyone knew or had aquick idea.

sounds like vc or planetary- im no expert by any means
here is a cheap source for parts that most people think are expensive

Re: transfer case issue im pretty sure

I thought the rears could be spun without the fronts, basically overpowering the VC. When a VC fails doesn't it lock front and rear together like a 4x4?

Re: transfer case issue im pretty sure

Every one of the sytys ive seen boost launch dont spin anytire only when leaving maybe, but im speaking when truck is completly stopped and stalled up , this truck acts like it holds for a second then breaks tires loose still at a stop and on brake. Its pretty weird to explain.

Typically yeah, but they can fail open or fail locked up.

OP you need to test the TC using the torque test.

when i attempted to do the boost launch it held for a quick second then as soon as the rpms came up just a tad bit more it just started to break the rear wheels loose at a stop and started to spin them, would this be the front diff or transfer case giving ,e this issue.

Have you checked that the T/C has any ATF in it? Its probably the chain you can hear or possibly the planetary. You might want to take the level or drain plug out to see what comes out. If its an egg cup full of smelly brown burnt ATF, you've found your problem. You could always try a drain and flush/refill on it anyway to see if it helps. But if its that bad and has no ATF its on borrowed time anyway as the bearings are probably bad too. The unit has an oil 'scoop'. If it gets too low on AFT, it doesn't!

Re: transfer case issue im pretty sure

FYI, I have seen many a video of SyTys boost launching with the rear wheels spinning. The engine can overpower the VC and spin the rears with the fronts locked. If it suddenly lit up into a massive tire shredding burnout then that's different, but if it just started to roll the rears then I think that's kinda normal (the experts can chime in here to prove me wrong).

Re: transfer case issue im pretty sure

The rear wheels can begin to spin while launching even while holding the brakes, as mentioned. Does it click driving in a straight line or while turning? Will it make tight turns without much issue or does it fight? Launching a truck in an effort to diagnose a noise is a good way to blow stuff up.

Re: transfer case issue im pretty sure

Figured I'd ask in this thread vs starting a new one when I just need reassurance/confirmation that I'm on the right thought process atm...

I think my TC is bad and stuck in the locked up setting. My typhoon has a very hard binding and hoping when I make tight turns. My jeep used to do that when the tc was in full lock mode. And my blazer does it when the 4wd is turned on. So I'm guessing that my tc on the typhoon has gotten stuck in the full lock mode.

I'm in the process of rebuilding the front end atm, which I believe the damage came from this being an issue for many many miles before I brought the truck. The half shafts had been torn up. and the bushings on the a-arms had warped to the point of pulling the steering out of alignment. Also the u-joints on my propshaft got sheered after a while.

Anyway, I haven't had a chance to get under there and do the torque test. But i feel like its my main issue and I'm working towards it. Once the front end is done, I'm gonna pull the front diff and make sure its ok and if it needs any attention. Then the TC.

Anyway... am I right in thinking my TC is bad based on it hopping around like a rabbit in corners and doing all that damage to my front end?

Also... is it hard to rebuild a TC? Never done one before...
