Transfer Case Failure

Well, the transfer case finally let go, :( it had been acting up for months though. I assumed it was a problem with the viscous coupler or the planetary gearset. For some time now when turning and especially when turning tight it would get in a huge bind, making a whine/groan and eventually causing the tires to break loose. It wasn't allowing speed differentiation between the front and rear outputs, like a 4x4 with a locked t-case. Yesterday it let go, I got on the throttle and, POP, no go, it just makes a whirring noise. The transmission seems to work properly, forward, reverse, although you can't put it in park without cutting the engine off. It will roll in any gear, so there is no connection between the trans and driveshafts. What's your best guess as to a diagnosis??? I would probably say the planetary gearset in the transfer case is destroyed, or could the viscous coupler also do this?

Thx Brad

"I know we'll have our 92' ty there, I'm real concerned about the t-case in the 93' but we probably bring it anyway. I'd appreciate it if someone could bring a laptop w/ datamaster.

Thx Brad"

man that sucks. if it is broken then i would like to know what happened. our transfer cases are pretty stout and if something goes wrong with them then i definately want to know the reason!

sounds good, :) how much, where are you located, and what condition is it in?? (how many miles on vehicle it came from)

Thx Brad

Re: Transfer Case Failure

i realize this is a *really* old thread, but in searching this is all i've been able to find on here about this. this sounds exactly like a problem that my brother has with his Ty, and we've been trying to figure out what it is.

does anyone know what happened with this problem, if it was the t case or the viscous coupling? does anyone have any experience with this problem and what is necessary to fix it?

Re: Transfer Case Failure

If you have no drive at all through the T-case, it is NOT the viscous coupler. If Park doesn't work either, you probably broke the planetarys. If Park works, you broke the transmission.

You can take the vicious clutch out, and throw it in the shit can, and you will NEVER KNOW IT until one tire exceeds traction limits (slips). If the input turns, but neither output shaft turns, it is NOT the viscous clutch. Something else broke.

Re: Transfer Case Failure

guess i should be more specific. my brother's truck has this problem:

except that his isn't quite so bad as to break the tires loose. when you turn tight, it makes a grinding noise and you have to give it some throttle to keep moving, like when going into a parking spot. we thought something was just rubbing bad underneath, but we put it up on stands and couldn't see anything.

so what do you guys think it is?

are they not going to have any resistance?arent they going to have that 4wd on dry payment feel a little bit?

OK. I thought that you had NO drive through the T-case, like the original poster had.

What you have is the Viscous clutch is binding, and needs to be replaced.. Common malfunction. Don't know how to advise you as to where to go for a new one. They're expensive.

Re: Transfer Case Failure

good to know.

i'm starting to think this truck was a bad idea.

anyway, i'll let him know and see what he wants to do with it. thanks guys!

is this a common problem? would a used one be a bad idea? was this viscous coupling specific to our trucks, or were they also installed in other vehicles?

we appreciate the help!

Re: Transfer Case Failure

I got a used one out of a junk yard but feel very uncomfortable using it. Almost guilty. As soon as I get my truck running again, a guy here in town sells brand new units for like $330. From what I have heard, only one company makes them so there is no "you get what you pay for" scenario, as far as I know. I could be very wrong. As far as actually replacing it, it is a piece of cake. The t-case is extremely easy to work on and parts are fairly cheap. With viscous, seals, bearings, planets you will spend around $600-800. Just depending on what is wrong. You can get a new chain for around $150, seals and bearings usually run around $120. Planets and other hard parts CAN be had cheap but you are going to have to get to know somebody.
