Trans pan wont stop leaking

WTF!! this thign sucks. No matter what I do, hte trans pan will NOT stop leaking. At first it only leaked from the drain plug, now, it just leaks all around. Its a B&M pan. It is chrome but I took a grinder to the mating surfaces to get the chrome off but it still leaks everywhere.

get an aluminum one or a stock one

i tried 4 different ones back in the day and ALL of them leaked!:2cents: :tdown:

I've got the aluminum B&M deep pan and it's dry as a bone.

Only thing I ever found that sealed the steel ones was a rubberized sealant called "Cat Red".... available only at Caterpillar engine repair shops - put it on about as thin as two sheets of paper and it never leaks - but have to let it dry before putting to use.

Get a TCI or B&M deep aluminum pan. Spray out all the bolt holes with carb cleaner and use blue loctite on the fasteners when installing the new pan. Oh yeah, cork gaskets are junk, always use a rubberized gasket. Should stay "bone dry" after that ;-)

I agree. I have a TCI pan. Had to grind a little to make it clear the front housing, but I used a rubber type gasket and a very light coating of RTV and it has been dry every since.

I used cork and rubber and they both leak. I will order me a new pan this week. I thought about the Derale but it doesnt look like it has a drain plug. Either way Ill be getting a new one. What if I sprayed a thin coat of copper RTV one the gasket first? I know it works well when I do water pump gaskets.

The torque spec for tranmission pans is something like 96 in/ounces or something like that.

Chrome pans are usually a very soft metal. They use a cheaper grade because it gets covered up with nickel and chrome. If you look at a stock pan, you'll see a raised ridge. That ridge with proper torque spec seals fine. Do not start spraying stuff in the pan or case. You'll have other problems. Get a cork seal, put some vasoline on it to hold it to a good pan and torque the bolts in a criss cross pattern. Too tight and they bend the pan and mess up the gasket. Too loose and fluid just dribbles out.

i've never had a problem with a stock pan and a cork gasket.. and i've never torqued to spec.. I have however always done the cris-cross pattern when tightening.

The stock pan are MUCH more forgiving. The aftermarket chrome stuff is just VERY soft and thin.

Well, I only used the chrome pan because of the extra capacity and it was free. Only reason I dont wnat to use hte stock pan is because there is not drain plug, think I may just install one and go back to it. I myself never had problemns with stock pans either.

Get a good pan and be done with it. The stock pan makes a freakin mess with no drain plug.

i chased what i thought was a pan leak for a LONG time , it turned out to be the seal around the detent cable leaking and the running along the top of the pan gasket and dripping off the left front corner of the pan. just something you might want to check.

Yeah its in. What a PITA!! I wouldnt wish that job on anybody. Ild rather do my trans alone and naked on the cold floor then do a diff. Still trying to work out my OD issue though. So far, Ive gone through the servo, governor and I currently have the VB out and all I could find wrong is wrong spring for the accumulator vavle and the accumulator valve seemed to be stuck in the sleeve. So far thats it. Right now Im just double checking everything and if this doesnt work I dont know what else to do.
