Did you drill out the drain back hole in both sides of the pump when you built it?
Drilling out that hole to 9/32" or 5/16" takes all the pressure off the back of that seal to prevent that. Your pump bushing was replaced when you built it wasn't it? Seemed like it was.

Jim..yes looks like we will need it. The trans is already out.
George..Its been a year, but I do remember drilling a hole in the pump per your recomendation. The bushing was new too, actually it was a completly new/rebuilt pump since my old one was cracked. Got 10 days to the nats got any suggestions on what to do?

What's different between park and drive as far as pressure behind that front seal?Re: Trans Leaking

Just going over the ATSG manual and inspecting my trans. It appear that I ommitted the Turbin Shaft Capsule. The manual says you may remove the ball for a firmer converter clutch apply but not to ommit the retainer. Could this contribute to my leak? BTW, this isn't a drippy leak, it is a something is seriously wrong leak. A couple minutes in drive and I have a nice pool under the truck.

The turbine shaft ball capsule delete won't cause that leak.
In park your idle min TV pressure will be about 75 psi.
In drive your idle min TV pressure will be about 110 psi.
Do you have any vibration?
Just popping a new seal on the front won't make it better. You'll have to pull the pump and see what's wrong with it. Something is making the pressure behind that front seal WAY too high to just be blowing fluid out like that. You'll need to check the converter hub and see if it's scored up. If it is, the bushing is shot as well. Look at the feed screen in the pump and see if a bunch of crud blocked it and look at the pressure relief spring assembly and make sure that's not blocked. Your PR valve assembly needs to be inspected of course but if your truck is shifting normally, it's most likely OK.
Now if your cooler is blocked or partially blocked, it can cause pressure to elevate in the converter and back to the pump of course.

I had a leak that seemed to come from around the bolts that held the pump in. Took the pump off, and found a real boogered-up o-ring/gasket on the bolt.
This might be obvious, but when removing the pump several times to get your endplay right,
don't put the o-rings/gaskets on the bolts until you're sealing it up for the last time.
Mine just leaked enough to make a mess, but I hate leaks. I ended up tearing it all apart to validate my last build.

I just read your post better. I don't know the actual pressure behind the seal itself but pressures all elevate when you go into drive range. If you run a gauge on that fitting make sure you route that up over the frame rail and the T-brace.

I've checked the cooling system and it seems to be free flowing, atleast with Air. The only thing I can think of there is I got the in/out lines switched and the external filter was causing a blockage because of it. Not sure there.
I also pulled the pump and took a look. I'm not real happy about the way that front bushing looks. The one right behind the front seal. For no more time than it has been in there it is pretty rough looking. The snout on the torque converter is smooth though. There are also some wear marks on the pump half near where the big spring inside it is. Could be a clearence problem?
I've got another pump. I'll have a local trans shop put a new bushing in it on tuesday and try it. I'm out of ideas.

Check cooler line flow and make sure they are hooked up correctly. If they are not you WILL burn up the clutches. It'll flow fine for around the block driving but as soon as you hit the interstate, your temp will skyrocket. Make sure the drainback lines were drilled out in the pump. Just because it was a new pump doesn't mean it was done correctly or at all.

Went through both pumps today. Didn't really find anything major. The design of the front half on the pump that was leaking is different than the 92 version I have. There are pockets machined out behind the seal area on the pump that was leaking. The 92 doesn't have those pockets. I ended up putting a new bushing and seal in the stock 92 Ty pump I had on hand after drilling out the fluid passage behind the front seal. The trans is all back together and ready to go in. I'm off to the garage to do that now. Hope it it doesn't leak.

Ah...the trans and t-case are back in. What a PITA that is to do by yourself. I need to stop going to the gym and just start bench pressing t-cases. Its not 100% buttoned up yet, probably about 85%. I still have to get the top two bell housing bolts, dip stick, drive shafts, and tighten the cross member bolts. Oh, can't forget to bolt the flexplate to the torque converter. Then I've got to get coil and plug wires back on and add some fluid. Hopefully I can wrap all that up tomorrow morning. We are suppose to pull out for KC tomorrow evening. I'd rather DRIVE the truck on the trailer than PUSH it. Still have to pack everything too! See you all soon!

All back together. Just need to add some trans fluid and start it up. I think I'll just add fluid and pull it on the trailer. I don't want to know if it leaks until we get to KC!
Off to run last minute errands (I.E. get trans fluid). We will be loading up the trailer this afternoon Hopefully on the road before dark. Got a long list of stuff to pack for the nationals still. Oh..can't forget to pick up the racing trophies!
