You're supposed to change the tranny fluid and filter once every 2 years or 24,000 miles... whichever comes first :roll: Some trucks that see light action with low mileage in good weather could go longer.... stick to mobil 1 synthetic ATF whenever possible... I'd say you're overdue for a fluid/filter change.. I'm wondering how thick the fluid will be if not burnt, hopefully not so thick that it will have damaged the torque converter or clogged anything to important in the transmission..

I don't like your thinking at all, man.. It seems you are waiting for a catastrophic failure before you feel fluid changing is warranted? By then it's too late and a >$2500 job for a rebuild + R&R.
I changed my tranny fluid after only 15,000 miles of usage and noticed a big difference. You should change yours if only for the reason that you can expect a change in how it performs. (assuming when its drained, massive failure is not identified).
If you drag race your truck or street race it or beat on it regularly (WOT once a week) I would change it no later than once every 15,000 miles. Its just not cost effective to wait longer when you consider the price of a rebuild.
I have a friend of mine who NEVER changed his Transfer Case fluid and well over 100,000 miles and his transfer case showed no signs of problems except it would chirp badly when making a tight turn in a parking lot. They drained his transfer case and metal crap and sludge poured out and it was $800 to repair. Do I need to recommend you change your transfer case fluid too?
BTW "Swede" has some pictures of an engine that failed because it recieved 1 oil change in 60,000 miles from an owner with thinking like yours, I'm sure he'd be willing to show you those.

dont get me wrong, i know i need to change the trans fluid, i was just thinking out loud that its a gift from god that i have had no problems...and yes you do need to remind me to change my transfer case fluid. but im no idiot the oil is getting changed tomorrow. I love my garage floor :lol:

hey yall i just changed the fluid in the clone and now it take like 2 days to shift what in the hell did i do wrong? the use castrol dex 3 and i also put a tci deep pan in and now it shifts softer that a babys ass do i need to take change the fluid to mobil one or what because it has always shifted hard what do i need to do ? jonathan sy#2716

Not JUST the transmission. The maintenance schedule shows ALL drivetrain fluids every 15K... thats the rear axle, transfer case, transmission, and front axle.
There is no drain plug on the front axle! You have to suction it out with a pump.
Also, when you drain the transmission by just dropping the pan, 3/4 of the fluid capacity is NOT drained; most is left in the torque converter. A better choice would be a transmission 'flush'. Check your local shops for this service done with special flushing equipment.
When refilling the transmission with the engine off, add enough new ATF to bring the level up to the 'Full Hot' mark on the dipstick, then add 1 1/2 quarts. The final level needs to be checked HOT with the engine idling. To get the transmission up to temp, drive the truck at least 20 miles. Mild power braking at stops will also help the process. The correct temperature is reached when you can't hang on to the end of the dipstick with bare fingers. With the engine idling add ATF as necessary to reach the Full mark. Don't overfill. More than a 1/4" or so over on the stick will result in fluid foaming and poor trans performance.

Here ya go.... Following two pics are of what the clutches out of a 89 vette with a 700r4 a bud bought that was not maintained. Funny thing is the car has 88k miles on it.
Notice the clutch material is gone and its down to the metal core??
My camera doesnt do closeups very well but you can see how burned/flaking the friction is on the other side of the same clutch.
This one on the other hand is out of a stock non raced syty with 120k miles but the trans had reg service.
Any questions?
