Alright I bought a syclone about a month or two back and now im havin tranny problems. I need to figure out whats wrong with it, and if i need a new tranny how hard would it be to put in my self and does anyone know the best place i could get one. (It is the 700r4?) I have found a place in ohio that sells rebuilt ones for around 700 is that good.

$700 is too cheap. You need to have your stocker rebuilt. Do a search on this BB or goto www.huryde.com and search the MOFO tech under transmission. The beginning of a real good transmission section. There is also a guide on there for the removal. I'm working on a list of parts to go along with the mods listed on the MOFO tech site. The tranny tech on there is Syty ONLY. No other trannies and no old v6(88 and newer only) nor 2.8 v6 bellhousing trannies.
I'm working on a parts list that will include everything that is in mine. Parts alone are gonna cost anywhere from $1000 to $2000 if you get everything and do it yourself.
DO NOT TRADE OUT YOUR STOCKER!!!!The valve body,servo,output shaft, rear planetary, and some parts in the pump are specific to your truck. As well as a higher stall converter(2075RPM as opposed to a ~1600RPM for the NA 4.3).
The things that happen most commonly on these units is the 3-4 clutches get burnt, the forward sprag tears up, 2-4 band gets burnt, and overrun clutch piston gets the seal blown off during manual downshifting.
Spend the money, do it right. Get an ATSG manual (blue cover not the green) and read through it and get the 700r4 rebuild video(Technical Video Series).
I'm looking for a 93 tranny to rebuild to syty specs and make a video of it so people can see what we're talking about when they are built.

so, either do it yourself if you have the know how or buy it, either way,right now is the time for upgrades.

brian hartman will actually sell you a diy kit if you would like.

huryde.com has a section about removal and reinstall. I had my mechanic do it for $200 because I didn't have the tools/time.

I've heard negative things about HuRyde's stuff, and about Hartman. Nobody doubts Hartman's knowledge, but his pricing has been questioned. But remember that you're paying for his support (just call him) along with the parts... He and HuRyde got into it here a while back, if you want to search for it.

I got scared when my tranny went. I knew next to nothing about them (howstuffworks.com's diagrams increased my knowledge tenfold) and had heard tons of horror stories. I had a local guy rebuild mine for $700. He had heard of SyTy's, but didn't know much about what they actually were. I got a Beast drive shell and Red Eagle bands. I watched him put my parts back into the tranny. I watched him check the play in the shaft. He didn't know exactly what the tranny was, but he knew what made those parts inside special. Someone said that most of the horror stories you hear are from people getting "regular V6" 700R4s, and I tend to believe him. So long as you get someone who knows trannies and understands that yours has special parts in it, I don't think you need to spend $3000 on one (unless you really want a $3000 tranny).

I've only had about two weeks to drive on it, but the tranny seems to be doing well so far. Twins rode in it for a bit, and thought it seemed pretty nice. Crisp shifts, softer at lower RPMs and harder at higher RPMs. I haven't noticed it acting differently from before the rebuild, so I guess that's good. Hopefully I can get to the track soon and see how it compares... I've only done a couple launches on it, but it's still holding up, for whatever that's worth. Being just a guy doing this in his garage he can get behind, but if you keep on him he does good work. So long as the tranny holds up, I'd have no problem recommending him to others for a stockish rebuild.

Mike a knowledgable SyTy guy - I don't know if he is building the transmissions himself or is having someone build them to his specs - might want to give him a shout.

The transmission info on Huryde.com came from me. I just put it into a word document and he sets it up on the website. He's a web site builder, I'm clueless as far as building web sites go. As far as the personal problems between Jesse and Brian, please don't let that affect your opinion of the info I gave him to put on there. Still a lot more to do. The info is straight forward stuff I learned after studying them off and on for 2 years before I did my first build. Done 6 since then. Only reason I had problems with mine was because the TC failed on the initial startup(along with some parts issues). I had never had one fail before but I knew something wasn't right with that clanging when I first started it up. Just a bad converter, it happens. Been fine since the new converter went in.
Heck, for all I know, everyone probably thinks I'm a dick too :D I hope not, but I hope moreso that people can make use of the info.
Hey, Bill, if you don't like the info please don't tell people to use it as a resource and then turn around and discredit it. Just confuses them as to whether the info is any good or not. I know it is because I wrote it, but they don't know who I am and most likely don't care. Don't mean to sound grumpy, just takes a LOT of time to put that info toether to have it recommended and discredited all at the same time.
I was just wanting to give the info out for free since this place has been so helpful to me. Kinda the way that Promgrammer dickhead gets upset when people ask questions about promgrammer :D Thanks for fixing that TC info on it by the way.
Maybe if I started charging for the info it would make it more legitimate? Help me out here....

Only $200 for removal?? That's cheap!! Most emails I've received from people thanking me for putting up the info seem to hang around the $700 mark for removal and install. You got a good deal!! $700 is what the locals around me charge as well.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to say anything about the info. I don't feel I know enough to say one way or the other. I was just saying that there always seems to be something bad about everything. That's why I said that I had seen negatives about both. Hartman, who most everyone seems to think is a SyTy tranny god, thought some of the parts Jesse listed in his posts weren't that great. You seem to know your stuff pretty well, which reassured me when I decided not to get a Hartman kit. I appreciate ANY info that is available, as it helps me to determine who knows what. If one person says something, and a second person says another, I don't know which to believe. If 30 other people say the same thing as the second guy, I tend to put more faith in that, even if the first guy does have a reputation. Regardless of the source, I don't just believe things without some sort of verification...

For everyone that I looked into about getting a tranny rebuild, I always found something negative. None of them had 40 people complaining about them, but I seemed to be able to find something bad about everyone... In the end I just talked to the local guy. He seemed to know 700's pretty well, and seemed to understand when I told him about the differences in our trannies. Sounded just as safe as any of the other options I considered...

Yup, removal, rebuild, and reinstall for $900. When the PoS-10's newly rebuilt tranny puked under warranty, he did the R&R for only $100. That's one nice thing about living out in the middle of nowhere... I want to wait a bit and make sure it's going to hold up before I go posting his name everywhere, but if anyone really wants it, I'll give you details on how to get in touch with this tranny guy. Email me or something. Like I said, it's just a small town guy doing this out of his garage, and when I got mine he was saying ~3 weeks turnaround. That's not counting a UPS truckload of SyTy trannies coming in either. =)

The info put up by Jesse and Blake made pulling my first transmission EVER easy. Well, as easy as working on these GM mechanic torture vehicles can be. The shop that I took my tranmission to rebuilt did it for $592.20. Even before I called around for someone to rebuild it, I made up my mind to remove and replace it myself. Don't like anyone wrenching on my truck I don't know especially if it's something that I can do myself. After I picked the tansmission up, for shits and giggles I asked the guy how much it would have been if they did it. Said that it would have been $1300. Seems my sweat was worth $700-I guess I should start bottling it :D . If you have a place to work on it, the right tools and the time, by all means pull it yourself and save some $$$ HTH's

I agree. The info on removal/install on the webpage helped me A LOT. I got too impatient and yanked it, but when it came to reinstall it I called a tranny shop and asked how much to put it in. They only charged me 300, and that was SAME DAY SERVICE and included the flatbed tow-truck to pull my tranny-less Ty to the shop. The money I saved on removal afforded me 4 jackstands, a jack, tranny adapter, and all the other extensions, universals, and misc. tools that I will have forever.

What parts arent that great? The parts list I used is and has been working for me with the exception of the servo. Thanks for all the kind words about the site everyone. Makes me glad I spend the time and money on it so everyone can see George and my experiences.

Hey guys i havnt been on for a while just wanted to say thanks for all the help, still dont know what im gonna do yet, but the truck is in storage for a while bein that im in school now, all mods are to come soon out of school.

As I've said before, I know next to nothing about this stuff. The Sonnax O-rings are one thing I remember. I'm not saying that they really are bad, or that something more expensive would be better. I'm just saying that I remembered some of that coming out when you two got into it.

Again, I am flat out stating that I'm not qualified to judge this stuff. I think EVERYONE should read EVERYTHING they can find, and make their own informed decision. I did. I didn't go the route most people would suggest (most would probably say specifically not to go my way), but so far everything is great, including the price.
