Torsion Bar Mounts

How in the hell do you get the cross member up high enough to get the mounts out and new ones in? The torsion bars go through a hole in the frame and don't give enough room to clear for removal and install.

I've searched and found some crap or knocking out a pin, removing the ride height bolt, and dropping that "porkchop" looking thing down....but I can't see how that helps my situation. I removed the bolt but haven't tried knocking out that pin.

HELP!

Been there looked at that did not help.

Raise the jack up until the crossmember lifts up high enough to remove the old mount (it has to clear that molded-in bolt I mentioned earlier - It will now become evident why the shorter studs or a drop-down bolt would be easier to replace).

I can't lift the cross member high enough. The torsion bar hits in that hole and won't clear room for the new mount. I even have the short stud on the new mounts.

BTW: The old mount is out. The rubber was broken and I forced it out.

Re: Torsion Bar Mounts

I've trimmed the studs down on the new mounts so that they are just long enough that the nut still fully seats. Then I used a big pry bar to separate things enough to fit the new one in..

My problem is I can't get the cross member up high enough to slip the new mount in. I'm not sure I want to cut the studs since I'm not sure how tall they need to be. But that may be my only option. Both mounts are broken now and I have to do something. Loose it can move up high enough to hit the drive shaft. :(

Re: Torsion Bar Mounts

The mounts I used had a bolt the went in from underneather and threaded into the rubber mount. (so it had no stud)

I've done this several times. You're either going to have to :
- cut the stud height down
- buy the Moog 'problem solver' mount that has bolts from the top instead of the stud (recommended)
- buy the version (don't remember mfg or part number) with shorter studs.

Take your choice, but you'll have to do one.

[edit] of course, one other choice: convert to coilovers....

Re: Torsion Bar Mounts

I have the shorter stud mounts now. I'm gonna try to take the tension off the suspension tomorrow and see if I can get them in that way. If that doesn't work I'll order the reverse mounts.

This truck is giving me anger management issues!

I broke down and ordered the mounts off Summit. This has to be the worst design I have ever seen on an automobile. I can't figure out for the life of me how or why anyone with a design degree would come up with something like this. And why a chief designer would look at this and say "Looks good!"

Exactly what I did. It didn't take long at all taking the little bit off of the pass side stud that was needed. I just used my bench grinder. It was still a PITA after that but it went.

As far as the design.........I have found quite a few different things that have left me scratching my head wondering what they were thinking. Motor mounts are the first thing that come to mind.

The problem!

Jack up the cross member and the new mounts slide right in. I even lowered the truck back down and all the bolt holes lined right up.

Now the results.....I have ZERO NOISE!!! WHoooohoooooo!!!!!

Man those old mounts were smoked. Makes me glad I decided to buy coilovers. Nothing made me happier than taking that crossmember out and not putting it back in.

Re: Torsion Bar Mounts

Yes they were. The pass side was broken ....most likely since I've had the truck. Been looking for that noise for a long time. The drivers side came apart as I was jacking up the cross member to replace the pass side. I've replaced most of the rubber on the truck now. No noises FTW!!!!

Re: Torsion Bar Mounts

Yeah, no noises must be nice. I don't have any torsion bar issues, but I could peel all of my control arm bushings out with my fingers. My truck was more like Freightliner truck handling ftw. Haven't had time to finish my coilovers yet actually, but I can't wait to test em out.

you have to rembember these trucks original "s10" frame came out in 1982!!!!!!!

so they were desinged in 1979-1981

so back then they were "state of the art" trucks :rotf:

fullsize chevys didnt recieve independent 4x4 front suspension untill 1988.....
