Im getting my tranny rebuilt this week. What rpm stall converter is the best for a stock turbo? Unfortunately I dont have enough $$$$ for a bigger turbo fuel system etc.

Re: torque converter ?

I have been running a Hughes Performance for well over a year now and have no complaints:
IMG_0655.sized.jpg

"3K stall TC w/lock up part #HP2230L $412.75 on 10/03 through paceparts.com list price is $956.37. The mounting pads on this TC need to be drilled with a 7/16" drill to accept three grade eight 7/16" X 14 bolts one inch long. The nut goes the motor side and gets 262 (red) LocTite."

I never tire of being able to go from vacuum at cruise to 15 pounds of boost in under one second... Driveability is great and I can't wait to see how it spools my BFT when I get it installed. If you opt to run a higher stall converter, a aux transmission cooler is MANDITORY or else you will be rebuilding it again shortly.

Re: torque converter ?

So how much roughly do you guys feel it may have dropped off your 0-60 times? 1/4 mile times? TIA.

Hey Mike...isnt it like a 20# weight reduction (rotational) from the stock convertor... :) That should help some...not to mention the higher stall.

Re: torque converter ?

A higher stall speed such as the 3000rpm hugh's unit above is not always a good idea to put on a stock turbo/motor truck. It will probably help you at the track with your 60's some would say. I've cut a 1.75 60' in my stock Typhoon with road huggers @ 25psi. Is what im getting at is why waste the money on something that is going to make your trans fail sooner and kill your miles per gallon for a possible .5-.10 gain in 60's at the track with some good tires and pressure. And the stock combo makes for a quick spool at 2100-2200rpm, why would you rather start making boost at 3000rpm then 2100rpm. A waste of low end power on a stock truck in my opinion. Wait to upgrade the TC when you upgrade the turbo. Just my 2 cents

Re: torque converter ?

If you plan on leaving your truck stock turbo forever I would use a stock converter and take comfort in the fact that your tranny should shift hard and operate properly for a long time.

If you are likely to race and upgrade to larger turbo and modify the motor I would compromise now and get a 2700-2800 stall, it will be a little big for your stock turbo but not overkill, and still work well when you upgrade the turbo. Just MAKE SURE it's not a shitty loose N/A converter and MAKE SURE it can handle the BIG BLOCK style TORQUE our engines put out. Otherwise you'll lose 5 tenths and a ton of MPH and your motor will sit at high RPM all the way down the track and you'll never feel it shift.
