What tool are you using to remove/install the bearing on either the idler pulley or the belt tensioner pulley? Brand and model number would be great. Thanks.

Dont people just replace them as an assy?

The original idler pulley is plastic. Don't bother. And yes you can get the bearings out. Just about ain't worth it though. Just change the things. The money is in the tensioner, try to buy just the pulley unless your tensioner is toast.

Re: Tool to remove/install tensioner/idler pulley bearing

I have a steel idler pulley, and I'm looking for a way to remove the bearing so I can get the pulley chrome plated. Same with the tensioner pulley.

Yes, the bearing can be removed because I paid a shop to do it before. I just want to do it myself this time. Look at my chrome plated tensioner pulley in the picture below:

A 30 ton press will work if you have something that is just a little smaller then the OD. of your bearing to press it out. You must only press on the outer bearing race.

30 ton would prolly flatten the entire pully. :rotf: I always forget about the bling.

the plastic idler pulley i have seen, the bearing wouldn't come out unless i grinded the plasticc of the lip.not sure what's up with that.

Ooh, that's pretty (not sure about the bearing ID though). I have a March polished aluminum idler pulley. The problem is the ID for the bearing is too big (around 17mm) for our 12mm mounting bolt.

It's around $30 to chrome plate the idler pulley if I remember correctly. It has been a while.

Need me to machine you a spacer?

I only mention the 30ton press because that what I have. But like Dave said I have to move alot of stuff to use it because I don't have enough room.

No prob. I know where of you speak. I'm space limited as well. At least now the Sy is running so I can do musical cars for oil changes and such.

Cheers

OK, here is what the March 725 billet aluminum idler/tensioner pulley looks like:

march_idler_pulley01.jpg

And here is a pic showing the bearing:

march_idler_pulley02.jpg

The bearing is 6203-2RS-C3.

Bore Diameter: 17 millimeters
Outside Diameter: 40 millimeters
Overall Width: 12 millimeters

We would need a 17mm OD x 12mm ID x 12mm thick spacer to make this pulley work in our application.

Because my mind doesn't machine in metric nor does the lathe just want to confirm.

Bore .669"
OD 1.575"
Width .472"

Do we want a bit of a lip on the front to seat against bearing?

Re: Tool to remove/install tensioner/idler pulley bearing

Here are the specs for the required spacer:

OD: 0.669"
ID: 0.472"
Width: 0.472"

A lip on the front is not a bad idea.

Stainless or aluminum?

I need to dig up some pipes, etc for you also.
