To paint the cladding or not???

I have a daily driven 20,000 sy. I love the truck. The only thing I really dont like is putting dressing on the cladding EVERY time I wash it. It looks great after I put it on but as soon as I wash the truck its gone and it collects dust to bad....What should I do???

I have the same problem every time it rains the stuff washes off. Its not like it takes 5 mins to apply the stuff right either (I wish Black Chrome came in a squirt bottle). I can't afford to paint it or do anything for it. I was just wondering if anyone has had their cladding on their truck clearcoated? Is painting the only other option?

When I bought my truck the cladding was painted black. I think it looks great and GM should have done that originally. Just my .02 cents.

Mine is painted also and I think it looks much better and is easier to maintain. My suggestion is paint it you won't regret it.

Ok I will let you in on a little secret...... The cladding is black platistic.. I dose not react to paint as well as if it were made of metal . It is not ridged enough to maintan the paint for years to come. I was trying to copy the stock finish and failed. So I whent to the automotive paint store and got some die.. They make plastic die in a spray can it works and looks beautifull and it only takes a couple of hours to tape and prep your truck the stuff is - SEM -FLEXABLE COATING FOR PLASTIC, VYNAL VELOUR, ETC.
THIS IS DIFFENALTY the cheapest, quickest and best die that i have used.... let me know how it goes,.... later cheatham

Cheatham is right, since you drive your Ty everyday your front bumper cover will look like shit very quickly without a bra to protect it cuz the polyurethane is flexible and the paint is not and will spider web or crackel not long after you start hitting little rocks and such. I'd dey it or use a "rubberized paint" such as used on tool handels like a latex but in a "high gloss" form. To bad it can't be powder coated, huh?

Merk recommended one of their products (modem is too slow to look for it) for Sy cladding to me. It has dye, so it does last longer than Black Chrome and its clones. I've never tried it, but Merk tends to be pretty reliable for SyTy info. =)

Totally false on the spider web and cracking.

My cladding is painted semi-gloss black and I love the way it looks.
I seen pix of gloss black cladding and it looks very nice also.

Well, your lucky, cuz my Camero's front end new paint lasted 1 summer before it was pealing again. My paint guy told me to "stop taking my sport's car off roading if I cared about the paint so much!" But not every raod here in Ohio is smooth black top. In fact, every other road by my house is cover in small stones and rocks. Oh, well, what r u gonna do ?!%

What all is involved in removing the cladding and re-installing it after painting? Also has anyone else tried the dye?

I cant imagine the dye being anything but a crutch.

lots of bolts and rivits.

Make sure to give the painters the rivit caps from the bottoms of the doors, and the licence plate light housings to paint to match.

autofasco has the perfect rivits to use.

i just had my cladding painted satin black, its looks exactly like shiney brand new stock cladding, only now mine will stay shiney. i havent used dyes or anything else so i cant comment. but it seems like a total waste of time to have to keep applying shit to the cladding to make it look good. its like going out and putting tire gloss on your tires every morning when its raining.

Note: my cladding is not satin in my sig pic, so dont use that as a reference.

That stuff works good. You are supposed to use it on any ruberized bumper or flexible body panel. I used it on an IrocZ and the bumper held up great.

Todd, if it were me, I would clear coat it using flex agent in the clear. That way it will always shine, clean up easily, and maintain the factory color. Just my .02

i dont have a digital camera so youll have to wait till friday till i can get some pics taken.

the paint i used is PPG 9700 black with 50% gloss. the paint will not fade/oxidize etc etc. as long as you keep a good coat of wax on it.
