Tips for showing at shows?

Come to the UK. ANY American car is a rarity!

Don't sweat it. It's a disconnect. You feel immense pride and can't understand why others don't feel the same way. These are rare vehicles so many people haven't ever been exposed to them. When someone does know what it is, that makes it worth it.

Grand National
Typhoon
Syclone

I've owned them and shown them since 1992. I showed the GN loooong before "fast and furious" when no one cared about a mid-80's G-body. This was in SoCal along side super high-end exotics and very rare muscle cars (I did the Beverly Hills show 3 times in fact).

Same with the SyTys. Turbo six shows are cool, but otherwise its just another day sitting by your car. I don't have full days like that like I used to.

But there's always ONE individual who either loves them or has never seen one in person. That almost makes the day worth it.

I'll take a good cruise night over a show any day of the week. You can come and go as you please and often see some nice cars.

Otherwise, stick to SyTy events.

Your wheels are the cat's balls.

I had all of my 3rd gen Trans Am's referred to as "KITT" at shows and swap meets. Clueless "car guys".

Re: Tips for showing at shows?

I have a binder with the clear sleeves with copies of brochures and fact sheets inside. The people that stop by usually look at it and if they didn't know its usually a "wow... I never knew" type reaction,

I too come across 4 different types:

- The walk by look, say nothing because they have zero interest because they probably have no idea what it is or they are just oblivious

- The HOLY SHIT or ITS A TYPHOON crowd that will gawk and awe over the truck and tell their buddy some crazy myth they heard about these trucks

- The Ones that legitimately know what it is and love talking and seeing them

- A former/current owner of syty's

Its fun to just sit back and listen what people say and look at their reactions. Sometimes I meet somebody awesome and other times I just get a laugh out of it.

I made this to inform. I put my syclone tri-fold out and it got swiped. to add it was the first show I wasever actually IN. This was 2 yrs ago. I do recall the crowds of people. Most memorable was a older guy who stopped to chat. Something obviously caught his eye. He must have been 80. He liked the truck. Cool encounter.

Best bet is to have some one photoshop a thing for you. I saw a guy who makes little collages out of foam board and some digital printing. He makes them for car shows. I thought it was a pretty cool idea, Because if you put your good stuff out and some one swipes it, your beat. The idea of a book/binder is great but I dont want people leaning up on my car or getting anywhere close to the doors.(thats just me). Not a fan of leaners or belt buckels or jean button snaps. I opend the door 1 time, and this guy was literally HANGING on my hinges ready to blow out the door pins. Some people are just too invasive.

^^ Nice. There are some very light weight, plastic frames you can get at Target or art stores and can put together a make-shift display sign fairly easy.

Most people have no idea what these things are. A simple display board with key facts could get you the attention you're looking for. A simple, yet big sign that says "Fastest vehicle in the USA in 199x" could do the trick.

I put a revel model on a turn table in the middle of bed cover. everyone stops to look at the model and some even look at the truck it's on..

Re: Tips for showing at shows?

i've done over 200 shows in my truck. I dont even lift the hood anymore.

I let the people do the talking. Most guys who "tell you" what you have, are so far off, its easier just to nod and agree with them. The people who know just compliment that its clean and rare, and ask how much boost.

My favorite was a guy told me that it came with a TPI V8 and that i ricer'd it up by putting a turbo V6 in.

I will take a picture of the poster board that I have for mine. Most people stop to read about the Syclone. Usually w/o it they just walk on by. Our trucks are usually always overlooked at car shows. BUT everyone knows what they are at a drag strip!

Re: Tips for showing at shows?

Many thank for the answers posted.. I agree, we get overlooked by the many, but appreciated by the few.

I guess it's interesting... how many people really remember cruising around in Dad's '55 Chev? How many of those people are still showing their cars? Peh... I guess time will tell how long those cars remain popular (Just like 50's diners).

Anyways, I kept the hood shut since I really had nothing to show (it was dirty, and a person in the know, knows what it looks like). However, like I said, I did have a few people who stopped to talk about what they loved about them. The poster-board will be to convert the unwashed masses. ;)

Any pics you have would be appreciated.

Here's what I made up using a 21x27 posterboard frame & a 5' easel from Office Depot. When not at car shows it is displayed on my wall.

I don't think my truck will ever be nice enough for shows. Probably just going to stick with the occasional cruise in and the few I have been to have been nice. Usually one or two people know what it is and then there are the "oh yeah, I had one of those once" guys but over all I haven't had too many douche bag experiences.

Re: Tips for showing at shows?

I've done a lot of shows with the sy and ty and get all the responces that have been mentioned. The few that know make it worth going to a show, but most are clueless. I get "where did you get the cool body kit" a lot, I just answer "J C whitney". I am having a spec board made for the shows so I dont have to deal with the morons.

Re: Tips for showing at shows?

Would be cool to have a sign that includes some of the myths, like the Q&A from one of the historic websites.

Q: Isn't this the truck with the Grand National engine?
A: Well, no. Not exactly. blah blah blah

Q: What's with the body kit? Did the owner add that?
A: PAS, blah blah blah

etc etc.
