Find top dead center with a piston stop and then make your own timing mark.

I never noticed my ecm getting warm while cranking.

Hold your thumb over the spark plug hole. It's easy to tell when it's on the compression stroke. An alternate method is to remove the valve cover. Both valves will be closed on the compression stroke.

If all you are worried about is making a timing mark it doesn't matter if it's tdc on compression or exhaust. As long as you find tdc.
