ticking - no knock, just annoying.

OK, so the truck runs great and there is no knock but the ticking from the engine is loud.

It varies with RPM so it's either injectors, rockers or lifters.

I have 65s, 875s, a 412 cam and 1.6 cran gold RRs.

has anyone got this combo and can they make a recording of how their truck sounds?

I think that maybe the lash was adjusted a bit wrong as the lifters are now filled with oil even though I primed it or I just dorked it up and didn't do it well enough.

It runs really well and drives well - I might be being picky but if someone else has this combo I'd be interested to hear their engine.

You might be able to hear it in a video I made. Excuse A) the cheesey grin and B) the Corvette sweater.

can you hear the ticking?

Sorry my cameraman is rubbish :rotf:

sounds like injectors to me. put a stethoscope or long screwdriver on an injector and listen to the end.

Re: ticking - no knock, just annoying.

so normal for 65s? If so then that's great news :)

Will do next time I see it.

I really feel like I might benefit from a hot lash adjustment as well - what do you think?

Compression was pretty high on all the cylinders last time I did it (as opposed to the first time where I had 0 on all :O )

pretty sure valve lash wouldn't be such a constant/equal sounding tick. And unless you have every push rod out of wack...the tick wouldn't be so frequent.

Sometimes the injectors make a ticking noise if the fuel rail is compressed to much, you can check this by loosening the hold down screws and prying up on the rail (gently) if this is the case then you just have to fiddle with the rail and injectors until the ticking goes away.

that is loud.... mine ticks but is only audible in the cab.... how much fuel pressure? If you put a screwdriver or stethoscope on the AFPR that will tell you whether or not it's the injectors. Each injector is a little noisy, but man, the AFPR adds them all together and makes a bunch of noise!

Its hard to tell but it sounds more like rocker arm to me. I have the 65s and they don't tick like that. It would be easy to tell, just use a long screwdriver as suggested. Place it on the fuel rail, afpr, and valve covers. You should be able to pinpoint it. Wouldn't hurt to re adjust the rockers anyway if its a fresh build. Its usually a good idea to set them after the initial warm up. Keep us posted.

Send me the dog BEFORE you read further. I have heard this noise in my truck. 2 things: Loose lifter. Meaning you have one rocker ticking because the lifter won't pump up corectly. Or bearings. Cut open the filter and look for bearing material in (on?) the inside folds of the element. I have seen both on my truck. It's getting a short block rebuild this winter.

does sound like loud injectors tome, however, i would cut open the filter in case.

That's a good precaution Don, I will. I hope it isn't. The engine has less than 25 miles on it.

I had some injector problems before and I don't remember the ticking noise with them. Got the 65s in and it was loud all of a sudden.

So I'm going to try the screwdriver thing, readjust the valves and cut the filter open.

Please let it be a valve or just loud injectors. I'll loosen the rail a touch as well.

You said you have 875's for lifters. These are quite a bit more noisy than stockers.

i also told him that, they are so loud that people even have problems with the knock sensor picking it up.
i could go outside and adjust the valvelash, but than again i rather see mark working on ot for a change. and he's that kind of man that posts before he checks out anything:tup:

I also have the 65# injectors and 875 lifters, and they don't tick that loud. Maybe it's a loose rocker arm. Remove the valve covers and wiggle the rocker arms to see if any are loose.

Re: ticking - no knock, just annoying.

I think rocker arm adjustment is the way forward...

Rene, can you just run it and see where the noise is coming from? Don't work on it - I know how much you hate my truck :)

Jus think, it'll be gone on Dec 22nd! That's my xmas present to you. :D

Maybe it is the exhaust after all...That would be better than any of the other options.

I didn't realize it had such low miles. I would think it's not a bearing. Injs are not that loud, at least on my motor. Which gets me back to a lifter either not working correctly or not adjusted correctly. :2cents:

it's coming from the engine:rotf:
