I have had this tick comming from my front end, I'm guessing my CV shafts in front are bad. I have had this tick for a long time. I can hear it when I"m coasting and driving down a street. It does not change if I'm turing or going straight. I changed my propshaft to a gilbet 4 years ago when I purchased the truck, not sure how long the tick has been there.

How difficult is it to change the CV shafts? Any special tools needed?

They're not too bad to change. You may need a impact gun to remove the hub nut. Other than that seperating the upper ball joint will be the only thing that may be a pain in the ass. Took me maybe an hour to change both but I have a lift so that makes things easier.

Btw autozone had them in stock

OK, I removed the center caps and took her for a spin. No tick. Now this tick has been going on for atleast 3 years. Granted, I drive my Ty less than 1000 miles per year. Anyway, I get home put the center caps back on and still no tick. I''m going to drive into town later and listen for the tick. If it returns, I plan on removing the caps and then listen for a change..or not.

Would a bad CV joint be consistant tick or can it come and go off and on??? One would think it would be consistant.

So, I took her to the store aprox 45 minutes driving time. I did hear the tick once, but it resolved itself. I can only hear the tick when I'm driving under 25 mph and I am driving in an area where I can hear the echo...if that makes sence. A street with a curb seems to work fine.

Anyway, the tick has resloved for the most part since I took off the center caps and then installed them nice and tight. They do have O rings, but they are not a complete O. They are like a circular shaped piece of rubber with a slit in them so are basically like a long piece of rubber that fit around the center cap. There is about a 1-2 inch gap in the O ring. I think it was the center cap all along.

Will a bad CV joint make noise, then stop off and on?

You can get new o-rings. Look at the ads at the top left of any syty.net page. It pops up from time to time.

Center Cap O-rings

These are a set of 4 CenterCap O-rings for STOCK 91 - 93 GMC Syclone and Typhoon Rims.
The original O-rings dry out and then the cap won't stay on tight and will rattle around when your driving.
These will also fit STOCK 1988 & 1989 17" Corvette Rims.
These O-Rings are brand new and not from the 90's so they're not dried out.

OK, the O rings posted are not what mine look like. Mine look as if someone cut them and they are an inch or two short.

Thanks everyone! Thankful I don't have to change my CV shafts! Granted, I'm gonna inspect them very closely next week once I get her up off the ground.

I gotta say, I really thought it was the CV joints. Not sure if CV joint noises will come and go, I figure the tick from a CV joint will be constant, right? When I had secured the center cap, they were nice and tight...I"m good at overtightening things:( so I did not think the center caps were the problem. What I think what made the ticking stop is I had moved the gasket off then back on the center caps. I guess its time for some new gaskets for my center caps:tup:
