Thoughts on Synthetic Tranny Fluid and Gear Lubes

We all know the benifits of synthetic oil. But I was wondering what everyone thought on running Synthetic ATF in the Tranny and Transfer Case and Synthetic Gear Lube in the Differentials? Is it worth it?

Differentials, don't know.
Tranny and Transfer case, yes.

I run Red Line tranny fluid. Expensive as hell to do a trans fluid change but the stuff seems to hold up. I busted my trans a few weeks ago but I REALLY dont think the fluid had anything to do with it(I broke hard parts of some type like sun gears or sprags. Dunno yet as its still in the truck).

If you dont mind the price do synth in the trans IMO.

we used to have a 30ish foot camper quite a while back. we would make trips back and forth to dallas, with "regular" oil in the rear diff.. when you would put your hand on it it would burn pretty bad. then we put amsoil in it and you could lay your hand on it and it would only be warm afterthe same trip.

Here's why. If some type of RTV (room temp vulcanizing) sealer was used instead of a gasket, the synthetic fluid will dissolve the gasket "maker". The synthetic fluids actually have smaller molecules in their makeup so they flow better and penetrate better. Unfortunately this means they'll go right around or through RTV and silicone. Pretty common cause of leaks.
So it's not the fluid's fault, it's the repair guy's fault. The shop that did my tranny install used Blue RTV between the transfer case and the tranny. When I put in my new rear drive shaft, I'll also be changing out the tranny fluid. Unfortunately, I'll have to pull the tranfer case and put in a real seal between the two or it will leak when I put in the Mobile 1 synthetic tranny fluid  Luckily it doesn't take all that long. Just pisses me off.

George - Good info on why the Syn Oils seem to leak easier. I guess they are just a better Organic solvent. Don't use sealer !

The only way U can get a full charge of synthetic in your trans is when U rebuild it. I think it is worth it if U R going to run hot w a hi Stall convertor. I just burned up the Forward clutches in one of my 200-4R's, and am glad I had all synthetic in there. I will now double the # of forward clutches.

Blake, I have had better experiences with synthetics. I rebuilt the 2.8,700R4,T-case, and boths diffs on an 88 S10 Blazer 4 winters ago, when I was obviously very bored. I used the RTV orange and black, and have never had even a drip.

I have used Castrol Syntec 5W50(as soon as it was broken in) And Castrol 85/90 synthetic in the diffs. I used Mobil1 Synthetic in the T-Case, and it works great.
I have recommended the Mobil1 to many friends with 4x4's and they all agree it makes it easier to shift the T-Case.

My gf just blew up the 2.8, so...time to upgrade the winter beater...hehe

How tough was that T-Case to tackle? I've done several trannies now. Is any harder than the 700? If not, where do I get parts from? I know I'm wanting to put a new chain in it for sure, and maybe new bushings.
Thanks!!

Transfluid changes are easy on our trucks takes 20 minutes, drop the pan change filter refil with 5 qts fluid, disconnect line from trans to rad insert in bucket start car let idle when bucket has 7 qts in it shut off truck and reconect line ( add fluid while truck is pumping out old and the 12 qts is with stock converter)

It was actually more work to remove&reinstall than to rebuild. Pretty straightforward, and if you can rebuild a trans, well then this is like rebuilding an alternator in comparison.
Just to clarify, this was a 4wd t-Case, not the AWD BorgWarner SyTy unit.
Pretty sure TurboTony can help you out with AWD unit.

I have a Haynes manual that spells out the rebuild fairly clearly, let me know if you need me to scan it for you.

Jay
