Re: This Blazer corners!

That beast belongs to a friend of a friend; part of the Sports Car Club of Vermont I believe. I've yet to see it in person, but I believe its an '85, 2WD with a 406 small block / 5-speed.

There are other vids...

Yeah I'm pretty curious as to the suspension set-up he has running under her. Any info on it, is he a member of any of the performance S series forums?

Re: This Blazer corners!

All I know is the guy's name is "Butch" King. I think his real name is Charles. He does a lot of autocross and hill climbs in the VT/NH area. I'll ping a friend of mine to see if he can set me up with any additional details on this thing.

Re: This Blazer corners!

Word I got back is that Butch is an old-timer who is rarely online, so contact is kind of tough. Details on the rig though, point to the entire underside being a custom-built full tube chassis, with nothing original to the blazer for suspension. The body just drops down onto the chassis. The only thing blazer about the rig, is the body.

I probably should have expected as much. Appreciate the info though, and it's still a bad ass truck.

Re: This Blazer corners!

I know this truck.

Met the owner a couple years back when one of the NH clubs was having an autocross @ Story Land. Saw the truck from across the parking lot and immediately had to look closer. Real nice guy to talk to, spent most of an hour looking it over and talking with him. Even with all the other racers and spectators there, nobody else seemed to be interested enough to come look at it. I think that he enjoyed that someone understood what it was and appreciated the work he had done.

I remember a cage, built small block, fabricated A-arms in the front end. Engine compartment & interior were pretty much stripped of all extraneous hardware. Rear is a quickchange IIRC - the video would tend to confirm that based on the sounds. Definitely spooled/locked and on a 3 link/torque arm. The bed surface was removed to permit the suspension installation. I think he was working on installing an elevated floor to seal it back up. Imagine local circle track racing parts blended onto a 2WD Blazer and you'll have a good visual of what it is.

Watched him run the course that day, very fast on the upper lot open section but the combination of the locked rear and 3-link really threw it fits on the lower tight portion. Large amounts of understeer were apparent & he appeared to be working hard to keep it in line. That's probably why I remember the rear suspension so well, thinking about the setup afterwards to try to understand what I had seen on the track. The low roll stiffness typical of those setups coupled with the locked rear and limited front end travel would explain why it acts the way it does. Watch the corner sequence again and it see if you agree.

Nonetheless it seems to be working for him. He said it regularly pisses off some of the other entrants at the longer events when they can't grasp how they lose to a truck that he welded together in his garage.

Re: This Blazer corners!

I thought the whinning was from the tremac tranny, but I guess it would be from the rear end also. Big time understeer, but look at the wide tires and in a short wheel base truck that would cause most of that problem.

Re: This Blazer corners!

I'd like to know the engine details. One of the vids posted has him sitting at the starting line, and as he revs it, the tach jumps and returns back to idle ASSININELY quickly, almost more like a street bike than a SBC.

Re: This Blazer corners!

I love that truck. It doesn't take too much to make the 2WD's handle well (at least in the front). The front G-body stuff interchanges and there's a big aftermarket there so it's easy to improve the geometry. There's also a truck-arm/coil over rear suspension kit available that's supposed to be pretty good.
