Think I blew my engine!

I was driving from Cincy to St. Louis for a couple of months of job training. I got about 10 miles from home and heard a sound like I ran a plastic garbage can and the engine shut off without warning and wouldn't restart. Then while I was on the phone arranging for a tow truck some a**hole clipped my driverside outside mirror and didn't even slow down. I was able to get the truck towed back to the house and grab another vehicle and make it to St. Louis in time for training but now it's probably going to be March before I can even look at it to see what let go inside the engine.

Wow that sucks. did it have a lot of miles on it? where you on it when it died? no smoke or anything right before it died? does the engine turnover or nothing at all?

It was a fresh rebuild with less than 2000 miles, just cruising at freeway speed. It blew a little smoke a start up but nothing major. I'm hoping it was just a timing chain or something simple because it would turn over and doesn't make any clunking or banging noise.

I just noticed that this was in the wrong forum. I thought I put it in the lounge.

yeah its in the wrong section. so have you checked for spark? or you could pull the cap off to see if the rotor is turning when you crank the engine. that would tell you if the timing chain broke. crank wouldn't turn the cam so in turn the rotor wouldn't spin. just tryin to help. id check easy stuff first. these trucks don't have coil packs right?

Re: Think I blew my engine!

When it cranks does it spin really easy or spin like there's no compression? I think it would be highly unlikely that a timing chain would break at all let alone on a recent rebuild unless something went terrible wrong.

Are you postive that's there fuel and spark? As stated above watching to see if the rotor turns would be an indicator if the chain broke or not. I agree the obvious things should be checked first.

Re: Think I blew my engine!

I think I can hook up a timing light for a quick check to tell if the cam is spinning. I haven't been able to check yet since I'm away from home for several weeks. Looks it's going to be quite a while before I can do anything with it.

Re: Think I blew my engine!

Thanks for all the input. The more I've thought about it the lees likely it seems that the engine let go. I think it was just the stress of having happen on the way to a new job that made me think it was catastrophic.
I don't think it was the fuel pump just from the way it shut down so suddenly, no hesitation just shut down. A couple of days ago I remembered that about ten years ago I had a problem with the ECM B fuse blowing, then it just stopped. I'm still about two weeks from getting back home and that's the first thing I'll look at.

Re: Think I blew my engine!

I finally made it home and had a chance to take a brief preliminary look at my engine. Unfortunately it wasn't as simple as a fuse, ignition module or fuel pump. I took the distributor cap off and cranked the engine but the rotor didn't turn. I was able to crank the engine and verify that the #1 cylinder intake rocker doesn't move. So it looks like I broke a brand new cloyes timing chain. I hope to get the front cover off next weekend (if the weather forecast holds) and see just how much damage was done.

LOL , suicide,,, Sucks when we have to blame ourselves,LMAO. Good luck with the repairs.

Re: Think I blew my engine!

I decided to have a local street rod shop do the work for me since it was just too cold out lately.

They found that bolts that secure the cam sprocket to the cam had loosened then sheered off. Guess i forgot the loctite. It chewed up the cam gear a bit but really ate up the crank gear and sheared the key way, no damage to the crankshaft though. They got me back running within a few days with a new comp cams double roller set and cam lock plate. (plus loctite)

I also picked up a replacement outer mirror so I'm finally back on the road with it.

I'll post pics of the gears if I can figure out how to include pics.

The best thing about low compresion motors, less likely for valves to hit pistons. At least that was all it was.
