tcc lockup kits

It's been talked about before....I know. I've searched and didn't find what I was looking for.
Are these kits simple to install? Do you have to manually engage the switch after the 1-2 shift, or is it preset so that it does it all the time? Costs, ease of install, etc would be helpful. Any disadvantages? Thanks.

You can build your own for free if you have some wires and a switch.. Just "T" into the ALDL A and F wires , they are connected to the top, outermost terminals of the ALDL connector. Connect both of the wires you T'ed into to the switch so that when you throw the switch, it connects the two. If you are driving 20-30mph and you throw the switch, you should feel it. You can use a paper clip to do the same thing but it will mostly just fall out and piss you off if you try to use it more than a handful of times. Believe me, I tried using one at the track once

You would only want to use the switch for a drag race.. definitely not engaged all the time!! When you are ready to use it, you can just flip it and then do a boost launch and nail it, it will automatically engage after the 1-2 shift. If you wanted to delay the lockup for some reason, you could flip the switch while going down the track, I think?? I haven't tried that and I don't know about any negative effects.

I have a Sy so I had the two "knockout panels" on the upper left dash, I used one of those for my TCC lock switch. "Looks factory!" The only downside is I don't have any type of indicator to say when the switch is on in case I forget to turn it off.

I have not noted any significant or notable gain using the TCC lock on my stock motor, turbo, and torque converter BUT from what I have gathered, if you run 17 PSI or more, you can begin to realize effects to the tune of 2 or 3 tenth improvement! Also if you have an improved torque converter like the 9/11" lockup, you could also notice the 2-3 tenth benefit. Hopefully some of those who have those mods can chime in with their experiences.

tooky, you can get some sort of cool labels that say OFF and ON or LOCK UNLOCK, or something like that...

I'm interested to know how to get a LED to light up if TC is locked that would be a nice feature to have like ya said tooky.

can we just hook up on 2 powers to the switch...one the TC the other an LED...and then on ground to the switch...should give ya a good indication when TC switched to Lock position right?

what ya think?

I have an LED hooked up on mine. All I did was connect the switch "in-line" between the A & F ports and hook one leg of a 12V LED up on the F side of the switch with the other "leg" of the LED hooked up to a 12V+ source, since all that is happening is applying ground to the F port of the ALDL. So now the LED comes on whenever the switch is activated or the computer locks up the TCC since the computer applies ground to the F port when it locks the converter. I also agree with Tooky, the blank panels above the light dimmer are great places to put switches, at least on the Sy's. I have the TCC lock switch and Intercooler pump switches there.

FYI - Painless wireing makes a switch that you can get at the local checker with the amber led in the switch. It dose really look factory... I need a digi cam. I mounted my swithches in the panel below the steering wheel.... People always ask if it came that way..... Late cheatham

Re: tcc lockup kits

so if were not running 17+psi you wont feel or more importantly see the diff in 1/4 mile ets? does it have a negative effect (other than more than normal wear/tear on the tc or tranny)?

Re: tcc lockup kits

Great info Tooky Cat, I myself was wondering how to get the TC to lock without a kit. I'll have to try this, since not having the TC lock gets old fast.

yup...you can go to any auto parts store or Radio Shack and get a lit switch.

Re: tcc lockup kits

Well, I got the DIY switch done, just one (potentially stupid) question: when I put the test light on the switch, is the TCC locked when the light is on or off? I would assume its locked when the light is on, since it is getting the 12v.

Re: tcc lockup kits

You oughta be able to feel it real easy, when you're driving around and flip the switch (to connect the circuit). The engine will really buzz at slow MPH coming to a stop (be ready to turn it off).

Re: tcc lockup kits

I discovered that a while ago when I first installed it, it would bog at low speeds. I installed a swtich with "on" and "off" on it, so its almost idiot proof:tup:

Re: tcc lockup kits

I did a lighted one in mine and it was nice to see when it's locked up. It was bright enough to see during the day and plenty bright at night. BTW I did mine with a blue light so It had a nice glow when on.

Re: tcc lockup kits

So when are Syty's supposed to lockup stock ? Someone told me that there is just a switch that makes it come on in 4th gear. Sound right ? Mine comes on too early and bogs like hell. Or maybe, my trans shifts too soon ?
