Take a guess what my Sy will run.

I would run 19-20 or so in the rear, front in the 25-26 range.
I'd do the shoe-polish test to determine what you need for a pressure spread, front to rear.

Would you please explain the shoe-polish test a little?

Re: Take a guess what my Sy will run.

Fontana is a slow track from what I have heard............So based on that I will guess a 12.00 @ 110.5.

X2 on heating up the bfg's. That is what I run and they seem to like some heat in them.

Re: Take a guess what my Sy will run.

I have a hard time heating up sticky tires,,,should I roll through the water box? Or go around?

I thought if you run 11.99 or faster you need a cage?

I believe it's 11.49 and faster needs a cage.

Good luck on your runs.

The 11.99 thing changed a few years ago.

You pretty much gotta splash through and land the rears in the box. Then a big-boost launch.
There's a burnout thread around here recently.

I dont know for sure if the burnout is really needed,i think it is just to hard on stuff.I think just a quick little spin of the tires works, unless your making huge power and really need to heat them up,I went 1.42 on mostly stock suspension and just do a quick one time spin.

Mitch Murray gets credit for this... been around since long before this board was here.

Find a big empty parking lot, or long flat, straight, industrial park road. Longer the better.
As straight as possible.

Set your tire pressures, and mark a line straight down on all 4 tires with shoe polish.

Drive straight for as long of a distance as practical. 20-30 MPH, you just want to cruise.

Once you've stopped, get out and look at where the lines are... they should be pointing at the same "clock angle", both left to right and front to back. If they don't, your tires aren't the same effective circumference. If the fronts are ahead (CCW) of the backs, they're smaller and need more air.

If you *really* want to dial it in close, Mike V. came up with this a long time ago...

Start your laptop/scan tool, and on a straight, flat section of highway (on a calm day), get up to exactly 60 MPH.

At a predetermined mark (use a pole or a mailbox or something as a reference), let off the gas.
Coast down to < 20 MPH.

Now, review your scan tool log, and note the log time at the point you let off, and the point you coasted past 30 MPH.

Subtract the two, and you have the coast down time. The object here, is experiment with tire pressures on the same section of road, until you maximize the amount of coast down time. Once you have that, your rolling resistance is at a minimum.

You can do the above with a stopwatch too, but it's not as precise.

You live in a warmer area of the country, though.

Up here, when the track gets cold, you need the heat. 80+ degree track temp, probably not.

I don't know how many people have told me the M/Ts don't need much heat, but personal experience has proven otherwise time and again.

Are you using spacers on your GTA rims? They look really nice.

Thanks!

No,,,, no spacers.

I am useing all four rear rims (front & back ),,,they have the most back spacing,,,not quite enough in the front,,but fine for straight line racing.

I think I will make my own center pieces,,,The factory plastic ones are a little bulky looking to me. I stuck one factory on the right front in the pic.

Re: Take a guess what my Sy will run.

I have a set of these mounted on our W-30 with the gold centers. But they are the stock 2 front and 2 rear. I don't remember which one, but 1 set has alot more back spacing then the other set. Have you check the stock off set for the GTA rims ? It was one of the things that I planned on doing this winter.

Re: Take a guess what my Sy will run.

I agree with too bulky lookin center caps. i like the drag radial look. and your intake scoop.
i am thinking you will run low 12's. probably flat 12.maybe hight 11's

12.50 12.40 et.

Racing this Saturday.

I have not raced it for about 3-4 years.

Engine is 100% stock longblock. Stock trans, stock 2100 stall converter, original brakes.

I will try & remember the mods done to my Sy.

Take a guess of what my Sy will run.

Throttle body airfoil,,WOW!!! ;)

I have an untimate radar style chip. 10-1

Aquamist 1S system.

Stock downpipe then goes into 3" exhaust all the way out back, straight through muffler.

Walbro 255 HP f.p.,

Kenne Bell afpr.

ATR cold air kit.

ATR aux cooler

Header core is used as resv for intercooler.

Sureflow pump

The turbo is a TD06H w/a 60-1 wheel installed,& a 12 cm turbine housing.

Stiffer wastegate acuator.

MSD 6A

J&S safe gaurd.

BFG drag radials on GTA wheels.

Larger rear wheel cylinders.

Engine tie down.

Phils safety loops

Ram air scoop,(feeds airbox though fender)

I think that's about it.

Thanks

Thanks for the compliments.

I hope it runs good,,hope the track has cool temps tomorrow, if it's really hot,,, that might burst my attempt to run 11's..

I think if you look @ most of the guess' here I should run a mid 12's,I can understand why also, most people think you need to hack the ecm ,custom tune to run really good, I have run good w/out having to do so.

Sure, I think ultimately with the on the fly tunning, it will run faster,,,but how much faster,,,Dig told me a while ago,,that the way my Sy runs, even a custom tunned chip is not going to make a day & night difference.

I'll keep you guys posted,if you really want to know the results ;)

I do not have a camera guy,but maybe the Buick guys will film my runs also???

It seems that most guys here in Cali w/there Sy'/Ty's do not want to race & would rather hang out @ car cruise places, I like doing that also. But have no time to do so with the little ones.

I took 2 days off of work (vacation days) to get the Sy ready to run,I have a 2 1/2 & a 4 year old that takes up all my time & never have time to do anything,,,my wife has a different work shedule than mine also,so going racing took a lot of effort to say the least.

Track opens @ 6 am,hope it is not too crowded like Pomona used to get, you would have to show up between 5 & 6 am,,if you showed up later than that you will be turned away because they would have made there maximum racers of 500 IIRC?

Re: Take a guess what my Sy will run.

Just a quick update..

I only got two runs & the first run which was the best ,,,,they had no timeslip for me.

8 hrs of waiting & only two runs,,,,,

Anyways,,,I only ran a 12.0 with tires spinning & wheel hop @ 108 A/F ratio was too lean,13.8 so I lost some MPH,,,,cannot do any adjusting w/only 1 run to see what was going on with the Sy,,

I knew it was quicker/ faster,,my butt dyno thought so :rotf:

Man,, is it this crowded/busy @ your local tracks?

I had to drive 70 miles each way for basically 1 run to read a timeslip.

I had waited so long from the first pass to the second pass the tire pressures creeped up to 38-39 PSI (hence less traction) ,,,just soaking up the hot Cali sun.

I'll post the timeslips tomorrow.
